I applied to Penn this year. I have made a small spelling mistake in one of my essays, spelled ‘bowled’ as ‘bowled’. Will the adcoms take it seriously?

Umm, you just typed in the same word... You spelt "bowled" as "bowled"?

sorry, i wrote it as 'bolwled'.

this is a grave offence and ur application is liable for rejection......

Also Upenn will make it a point to check in the records and make sure u havent repeated the same mistake in your application to other colleges...

Very serious indeed... a BIGGGGGG spelling mistake that will take from you the opportunity to attend amoing the world's best University ..

How can you be so casual about your applications....

SM

No...Dont worry...Its not a big mistake...

I read this on Matt McGann's Blog (Assistant Director of Admissions, MIT)

The article said that an admissions officer will stop reading the essay and deny admission to the student just because of a typing mistake. Is that really true? Isn't it unfair to international students, who might make a grammar or awkward word usage mistake because they are not native speakers?"

That's not true, not at MIT, and I'd be surprised if it were true anywhere.

You're done. ;)

totally...

You're fine. ;) An adcom from a top LAC told me once that they had an essay written entirely about "brocolli." Yes, as in broccoli. Yet they were accepted. (Colgate University - normally 27% acceptance)

I don't know, typos are worse than misspellings because they are almost always caused by rushing.

An accumulation of typos will raise concerns, not a single one. So don't worry.

Nah, it's cool...it would have been better if it was a funny typo though :(

like one guy on the brown forum wrote something like: "I will most definitely rape the opportunties and benefits presented in...", saying rape instead of reap in his essay. Thats a classic though :p

i had two typos in one of my essay's when i applied.

<3 2010

I had the "rape" one.

man that was hilarious. I was laughing so hard after I read it the first time

hahaha.. rape the opportunities!! hehe

hey tejaskumar2005.. i dont think its extremely serious or nething.. i did have a very small grammatical error/spelling mistake in my essay as well which Microsoft word did not detect when i did the spell-check.. but hey im in Penn now!.. if ur spelling mistake is not repetitive.. and if there is only that one world "bolwled" and no other spelling mistake.. then i dont think ur in any grave danger of being rejected.
im sure admissions officers understand the stress under which students complete applications, esp. essays.

so .. neways. good luck. and relax!

Hey. Don't worry about it.
I spelled "enrollment" wrong in my application to Dartmouth
but was accepted. (well. got a likely letter)
Relax! :)

not as bad as mine-- i told them that "i would take the opportunity to have sex with each one of the adcom females" if they accepted me

it was no spelling mistake

and yes, i got in...

what??? are u kidding?

wow!!!
that just goes to show how much the admissions people "read" or "don't read" the essays!!

jabbermouth!! what the hell made you write that in a college essay!!
haha
