Hey everyone! I was accepted ED to Spelman & I am really excited to meet my fellow classmates. There isn't an official FB group yet so I thought I would try to reach out on some forums like this one.

My daughter rcvd her EA decision letter last week just before christmas . She was very excited but was hoping for some form of scholarship. I was told that some scholarship letters go out separate, so we are hopeful, otherwise it will be very difficult for her to attend . She is also waiting on Howard University decsion as well . Did you apply early decision isn’t that binding?

not us… My d will not be attending… We rcvd financial package from all other schools that accepted her but not Spelman. pretty sad since this was second aceptance out of 11 …and rcvd admission packets in Dec .

My d applied to this school first --in October—and at the end of the first week April we have not heard one word about financial aid!!! This is extremely tacky, unprofessional…and cruel! It has been month upon month upon month of waiting. They expect these girls to get things in on time and then the message they send is that you can work at your own pace…who cares whose life is in limbo??? It makes no sense that every school in America has given this info by now, but not the “great” school of distinction, SC!!! We have talked to alumni and some said they did not hear from fin aid until late April, Mid May or mid June!!! Dont waste your time calling because they have no urgency and could care less that the best applicants will not snatch up other offers before May 1, rather than wait for SC to send a scholarship/fin aid letter in…August?! Parents avoid this school like the plague

Our daughter was accepted to Spelman a few months ago and has in fact received the award letter. We’ve not encountered any issues with accessing information, to date and feedback from current students and alumni has been positive. In addition to Spelman, our D was accepted and received significant scholarship offers from several universities though we have not yet received the official ‘award’ letters from every school. Could be because the CSS was required at a few and we completed it in March. We are concerned however about how late in the month Spelbound is taking place - with decisions due by 5/1, it’s tough to delay making it that long, on the other hand, she needs the visit to really decide.

We received the financial package a few days ago , extremely disappointed, nothing but loans . It’s hard to believe that a University would offer a student their Honor’s program but would not allocate any scholarship. Needless to say Spelman is off the list. We have amazing offers at Boston University, Smith College, Vassar College and Fordham University. My daughter will be able to graduate without any loans, nothing can beat that.

My daughter was attending Spelbound later this month, upon receiving the so called financial aid packet I called airline and had her flight cancelled. Surprisingly happy when Southwest gave us a voucher for the full amount to be used within a year. No complaints about Southwest but can’t say the same for Spelman.

I was afraid to purchase a ticket for the same reason! Spelman should have given us the financials WITH admissions like every other school in America. Why they waited until April 1 to even begin financial deliberations is beyond me…Do they realize no smart family will throw away scholarships from other schools in this bad economy while waiting on a school that still uses CP time! They def should have done the financials long before Spelbound to give us a chance to know whether we can afford Spelman while we still have time to get a reasonably priced plane ticket…Zayda4 you are fortunate to have gotten a refund

Our D was accepted at 11 schools and has declined 5 scholarships to attend Spelman and though it’s a tough decision to decline full rides at other great schools, we support her decision. In reference to the timing of award letters, many admitted students at Spelman have received scholarship offers, typically, the very, very strongest applicants for the limited merit awards available. We remain optimistic that our D will receive an award as decisions are made and students choose other schools, however, we’ve been saving money for her since birth and we’re blessed to be able to support her dreams. Not everything free is worth it…:-). I was amazed at the quality of the young women I met at Spelbound this past weekend and no other school that she was accepted to, including Tulane, Ohio State (with scholarships), etc. spoke to her the way the women of Spelman did. She’s made a choice to change the world and we couldn’t be prouder.

I am happy that your daughter got into 11 schools with scholarships! I am sure she worked very hard for that. But something you said raised my eyebrows a bit…I personally would never advise anyone to decline a full ride so that they can pay for college–regardless of how much they had saved since birth. I would re-invest that money and build wealth for my child, but I guess everyone is different. I can’t help but think how if you have those resources perhaps you could have let your daughter use the full ride and maybe pay for another kid to go to college (since you have excess according to you)? That is how we take care of our village. And I think the graduates of OSU and Tulane would take exception to your comments that “everything free is not worth it.” Love and happiness and humility are free, for example. As far as Spelman’s scholarships being reserved for the top students… That is only true in a fantasy world where meritocracy actually reigns. Many things at HBCUs are political and donor and legacy-driven. Let me correct myself, that is TRUE everywhere…I will admit that my Ivy League education would have guaranteed my d preferential treatment as a legacy, but she wanted Spelman…
At the end of the day, Spelman is not the only path to success. It is just one of many…All of our daughters have different destinies and life assignments. And thank Goodness too, Spelman does not have a monopoly on positive black female role models. My daughter only has to walk down the hallway to find hers…In sum, Chicken4egg, like someone just told me, ALL of our daughters will change the world–just from different places. I pray Spelman is everything you hoped it will be…

I wouldn’t be so rough on Spelman. Yes, the college should reform its notification policy to avoid creating problems for admitted applicants. But, Spelman’s COA is already lower than many other LACs with equivalent superior educational offerings. No excuse for bureaucratic indifference, just some insight.

marie1972 - thanks for the congrats and perspective. I agree with you that there are many paths to success. I wish you and your children the very best of success.

I got acceptence from Spelman, and I’m curious about housing as an international student because at homepage it says Spelman does not offer summer housing. Then should international students leave their dorms in summer?

marie1972, at the end of the day Spelman may not be the only path to success, but it is the only path that is recognized (consecutively number one HBCU)! Spelman is one of the top producers of Fulbright students and students are sort after by fortune 500 companies daily. I too attended an Ivy League college in NYC albeit; my daughters could not have made a better decision on attending Spelman. Honestly I wish I too had made the same decision. There is no legacy treatment on admissions to Spelman, an admission is based on many factors, and however, legacy is not one. It appears that God has answered your prayers as Chicken4egg will find that Spelman is everything and more. You posed the question to Chicken4egg t why she did not forced her daughter to accept scholarships? You can offer you daughter preferential treatment at and Ivy league school, but she wants Spelman, did you ever stop to think Chicken4eggs daughter may want Spelman as well. Did your daughter not gain admissions into Spelman? Sounds like sour grapes.

Just now seeing this-- a year later-- Spelmomof3… Sour grapes??? You sound obsessed with Spelman… No sour grapes here. My daughter got into Spelman but chose Hampton…largely because its pre med program is stronger, its science professors are stronger, oh… .and because it has a library (they ARE important to some of us) AND athletic and study facilities in case she wants to work out or go study in some place other than an academic building or her bedroom. Finally, she thought it might be a good idea to have boys, sport teams, a marching band, and more than 5 buildings on campus…In other words, she wanted a FULL college experience. She LOVES Hampton!!! The jury is out on if Spelman really is the best hbcu given all of that. (White ranking systems be damned). Smooches!
