How much spending money do people normally bring with them when they go to college? I'm getting worried that I might be broke by 1st semester! My friend's brother attends a college in D.C., and she told me that he spent a little over $1,000 by the end of 1st semester! (I think he went out to dinner a lot, went shopping, parties, etc). Your opinions/experiences?

Well, it depends on what you want to do and what school...

Do you want to eat out and go shopping? I think you definitely need some emergency money for maybe things you forgot at home which you absolutely need your first day (soap? toothbrush? books? Maybe a cup of coffee after to calm you down?)

Also, as for schools, I know at swarthmore, anything on campus is free, as in: its been taken care of by your tuition and any plays, speakers, or such are free also. However at other schools, these extracurricular things aren't always free.

i make 400 per month, and that covers me for the most part.. but thats including my car payment, and my monthly insurance fees. i also have to buy my own groceries and gas and whatnot.. so 400 is very small. 1000 for 3 months isn't bad in DC - things are expensive there.

It really depends on where you are. DC is a very expensive place to live.

I spend like no money... I hardly ever go out to eat. My parents give me $30 a week but I just save most of it. The only money I spend basically is at the Wawa (highest grossing Wawa in the state, and it doesn't even have gas).
