Spending money?

For current students:

How much do you normally spend a month?

I'm thinking $100-200 a month should be sufficient. Let me know if I'm off.

$100-$200 a month is a lot to spend. The only spending money you need is for shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc. and going out to eat money, but really you shouldnt be going out that much since tuition payments include your meals. spending money to go into Boston, but again that doesn’t happen all that much. Harvard provides lot’s of free activities on campus. Some months you may spend more than others. There were some months when my son didn’t spend any money because he was busy studying and didn’t have time to go out.

$150 a semester is my budget.

Harvard provides you with everything- especially food if you know where
to go when and hoard nibbles like a mouse :)

If you have an active social life or are a girl, you may need the higher amount. Dates at Finale for dessert, a little supplementary shopping at Trader Joe’s or Broadway Market for fresh fruit, hair appointments, on campus concert tickets, all add up.

I would say that it depends a lot on the person, your activities, and responsibilities.

My son just graduated from Tufts. Each semester he transfered $1000 from his summer savings to his checking account. Each semester I believe that he had leftover money. This was just his personal spending. We covered all his books (this ranged from $300 - $500 per semester) and all his ski team club dues, training etc (freshman year that was about $2000 and the following years about $6-$700) so they were not part of it.

Twenty five years ago when I was in college, I did have to pay for my books and I spent $2000/year.

So as you can see you have quite a range from Synth at $300/year to my son at about $1800/year and, if you spend like my son but have to pay for your own books of have other unusual expenses, you could be looking at $2500+.

You’d be surprised at how much the little expenses (snacks, Diet Coke addiction, public transportation, etc.) really add up. My freshmen year at Davidson, I spent probably $100-200 per month. Also, I joined an Eating House so I had social fees to pay.

I guess I should be grateful to my son for not spending $ just because he wanted to. He lived on a budget and I apprecitate that about him :)
