I'm a freshman interested in joining a spirit group (Spirits, Lonestars, Lassos, Sweethearts, etc). Can anyone tell me about any of the groups individually? i.e. their reputations, what their presence is on campus? Any that y'all would recommend?

omg yes im intersted to!!
so far from my research im thinking sweethearts and spirits are the two best? but im not sure since im a hs senior lol

I’m currently a freshman too and last semester I tried out for Spirits, Sweethearts and Lonestars. I"ll go through them briefly and let yall know what I know and learned from the experience! They are all very competitive to get into but Spirits I think is the most competitive. First, you go to the information meeting and they give you an application where you have to an art project and they only give you 2 nights to do it. After you turn in your project, they cut down the applicants to 60 girls. This fall there were about 200 girls who tried out and so they cut 140 after the first cut and selected 60 for interviews and to go to some dinner events/parties whatnot. I made it to the 2nd round and loved the girls during the dinner/events etc., sadly I don’t think my interview went very well and I didn’t make it. The interviews are really intimidating, they have about 9-10 of the officers sitting all in a line facing you and they make you sing and dance and do things of that sort. They cut the 60 down to 25 and 25 are selected as the new member class… so as you can see it’s very competitve. However, I think I’m going to try out agian next semester, because several of the girls tried out more than once to get in, even the current vice president and president.

Sweethearts… I didn’t make it past the first round, but I’m not really sure how Sweethearts works. I don’t see very many girls that are Sweethearts around campus, but at the information meeting, they seemed pretty close-knit, but they seemed selective and somewhat exclusive.

Lonestars… I made it past the first round and onto the interviews. The information meeting was great, the girls seemed really genuine and really nice, and I didn’t want to make ANOTHER project (you have to make a project for all the spirit group applications), but after the info meeting, I decided to anyway because they all seemed super down to earth (way more grounded/non-sorority than Spirits or Sweethearts). Anyway, I made it past the first round and onto the first round of interviews, and I just didn’t feel like they were the right group for me, but all the girls who were in it really semed like they loved it and they were all really close and knew who each other were… I get the sense that in Spirits and Sweethearts, you only really get to know your new-member class and the class above you and not really any of the older girls…

Hope that helps!

What a helpful post! Thanks.

You know, Alpha Phi Omega, the club that brings the Texas Flag out onto the field at home football games and drops the Texas Flag from the tower at events like Gone To Texas at the beginning of the school year, is a good group too. If you enjoy community service projects, they’d be happy to have you. (The group has a Greek name but they are not a fraternity or sorority.)

Thanks for all your help everyone! Has anyone heard anything about Lassos? They don’t seem very well known on campus…

IMO, the top 3 spirits group for girls are Spirits, Lassos, and Sweethearts. They have a sorority feel for them.

texas2013-- thanks for the post!

I’d like to know more about Lassos too, as well as more about the other spirit orgs from anyone else who tried out for them. I’m really looking into Sweethearts and Lassos.

I’m a guy in a fraternity. I’d say spirits is the best. I don’t know anything about Lassos or Sweethearts but I know a lot of hot Spirits! I’d check out Lone Star and Absolute Texxas but they are more new, have less of a reputation, and like to party a lot! If you want I could get you a Spirits name or could recommend you or something. Good luck :)

i dont think im going to try out for spirts anymore since im not a very good singer loli really love sweethearts though!

why the hell would they make you sing?
like do they put you on the spot and you have to sing or do they pick a song and you rehearse and everything?

do they look for like super exited hyper girls?

I’m in Lassos and i’m obviously biased, but Lassos has honestly been the best thing that’s happened to me my whole freshman year! I’ve met amazing friends, and all of the girls in the organization are amazing. I never have a weekend where I’m doing nothing, the Lasso social calendar is always full! I had so many opportunities to do fulfilling service for the city of Austin and our main philanthropy Austin Eastside Community Connection is so humbling and great to be involved with!
I’d really encourage girls looking for a tight knit group of girls to start their Freshman year off with to join Lassos, it is truly an amazing organization!
and ps you don’t have to be creative and do elaborate artistic things to join…

Hey!

I’m also in Texas Lassos and it’s amazing! The organization is getting bigger each semester and everyone gets to know each so well! The older girls LOVE getting to know the younger girls and everyone is so fun to be around. Honestly, I have met some of my best friends through Lassos and if you want a jam packed social schedule, Lassos is the way to go. The application/try out process is completely unique compared to other spirit groups and while it sounds stressful, it turns out to be soo much fun and you get a chance to know the girls even more. We all sit together in the flashcard section under the jumbotron for games, volunteer at Eastside Community Connection, celebrate birthdays… the list could go on forever! We are tabling a few days before school starts next week and we’ll have info sessions coming up soon so feel free to come talk to us and ask questions! We’re super friendly and can’t wait to meet you all! :)

It’s funny that I posted on this thread forever ago, as I am now a Texas Spirit, and I love it! I figured that as these threads would probably be heating up again, I could now make a quick plug for an organization that’s near and dear to my heart.

Things I love about Texas Spirits:
My pledge class is really close-knit, and full of girls who I feel like I could call anytime, day or night, to get coffee or fro yo, or even just to talk.
When you become a Weenie, (what we call our new members) all the Spirits are so excited to meet you and to see what you’re all about.
We really do value what makes each and every girl unique.
Our traditions date back to the 1940s, as does our love and spirit for the University of Texas.

As a caveat: There is a try-out process, but it’s not as scary as everyone makes it seem. The whole purpose of the projects and the interview is to allow us to see what you’re really about in a way that maybe brings you out of your shell. My best advice would be to make something that you’d be proud of, and make something that you’d want to keep, something that would be meaningful to you (not that you’ll get to keep it).

If anyone has any questions about Spirits, feel free to PM me!

It’s been a while since anyone has posted on here, but just in case people google this in the future, I figured I would rep the Sweethearts <3

I joined Texas Sweethearts the first semester of my first year, and it has been nothing short of amazing. I met my best friends, and this organization gave me the support and confidence to take on such a giant school and community.

We recruit in the Fall as well as in the Spring, and Sweetie classes (pledge semester) are made up of anywhere between 20-30 girls. It’s definitely competitive and a lot of girls end up trying out twice or three times, but we would all agree that it is well worth the wait!

To apply you have to come to an info session, where we’ll tell you about our philanthropy, and our three pillars, social, service, and spirit. i’ll sum it all up here:

Service: our main philanthropy is at The BeHive USA (formerly known as Heart House,) which provides free after-school care for at-risk youth in Austin. We volunteer weekly as mentors and help with homework and just generally play with the kids. A lot of them don’t have strong role models in their lives to encourage them to study hard so they can go to college, and volunteering here is such a rewarding experience.

Spirit: We are the only all-female organization on campus to host our own tailgates! We tailgate for football as well as baseball and basketball, and basically any other sport with a parking lot. We also have our own OU trip in the fall, and we’re really proud of that. We all go to games together and support the longhorns, and we also spend time with other spirit organizations such as the spirits and the lonestars, or male groups like the iron spikes and the wranglers.

Social: we won best social organization for 2011, and we are SO proud of that! We have tons of mixers with other spirit organizations as well as club sports teams like soccer, hockey, and rugby. We also have bartabs and big social events such as Crush (where everyone can invite three dates) as well as our formal evens and a giant boat party in the spring. We also do a destination unknown event and date-dashes. All in all, the reason we are so proud is because we incorporate social into everything we do! We have tailgate and service mixers to get to know other groups, and we always have tons of fun together.
