<p>I made this thread for the doctor thread, but I think it needs its own topic. Please read this.</p>

<p>Most people who want to become doctors and even doctors are idiots, I don't consider somebody smart because they can read a book. The people who want to become doctors are idiots and most of them have No Common sense, if it doesn't say what to do in a book, they don't have a clue. This is a Big reason why so many doctors need to go to Business school before or during there practice of medicine, they just don't have a clue in the common sense area. Such as my room mate this semester, He a Great Guy, Very very Book smart and I love him like a brother, but ask him what to do in real life, He wouldn't be able to tell you same with all of his friends. He world tell you he didn't learn that yet. Now for somebody who wants to become a doctor, I asked him some questions, I said what is a Heart Attack, No clue, just knew it was bad, Ask him what a laxative was, No clue, what diabetes was, No clue, didn't even know what hydrogen peroxide or beta dine was. I said how can you not know this stuff, you want to be a doctor, this stuff is just common, your Local Janitor would have 50X more medical knowledge then some of these pre-med students.</p>

<p>The lack of life experience of some of these kids is also pretty dam insane, as humans we are moving and ever changing organisms, not everything always go perfectly. I wake up one morning and my leg hurts, no real reason I just say hey man can ya get me an Advil my leg hurts. He says why does your leg hurt, I said I don't know it just hurts, sometimes your body just hurts. He said Mine never has, I looked at him and said everybody gets common pains sometimes in there lives, sometimes your body just has an ache, He said well mine never had, you should go to the doctor, I said your insane its just an ache. We then went into this whole big thing on asking people if they had everyday pain, all of his friends said they have never had a pain before. while all random people we asked said, yeah sometimes, I'm sure many of you here will agree.</p>

<p>We get into arguments all the time,</p>

<p>He says he has never had Diarrhea/Constipation.
Never threw up,
Never heard of somebody being sick for more than a day.
Didn't know what Katrina was or the Tsunami in Asia.
did int know that some poeple are Poor.
didn't know that students paid for there own school
didn't know that not all students have cars
didnt know that some students paid there own tuition.
and many more.</p>

<p>He was so surprised that I was poor, didnt have a car and that I go to school 100% by myself with No help from anybody.</p>

<p>I don't know how people like this become doctors, he has had life handed to him, and been so protected from the outside, he only knows one way of life and I don't know how he can be compassionate to other people.</p>

<p>If someone could elaborate on this it would be great.</p>

<p>Yeah, I've noticed especially at pricey private schools, a lot of the people there have little/no concept of money or poverty.</p>

<p>Fortunately, although many premed students are spoiled, this guy is certainly the exception. I have yet to meet anybody like that at Brown, and I know a ton of premeds. Many of them are wealthy, some are quite sheltered... but nobody is anywhere near as ridiculous as your roommate.</p>

<p>PS I think this would been a little bit more convincing if you used correct spelling (there-> their) and correct grammar. I don't know, it was bothering me as I read on.</p>

<p>Your story reminds of watching those TV shows where the rich characters don't know what dollar bills are, or My Super Sweet Sixteen. Just ridiculous.</p>

<p>And he probably was sick with those things, he just probably didn't know what it was. Boy, I feel incredible pity for his future patients, if he makes it out of school.</p>

<p>Being rich doesn't mean you can be stupid.</p>

<p>At the same time, no one should ever apologize for being rich. The fact that you're economically priviledged doesn't mean you have an obligation to save the world. If being selfish and self centered makes you happy, more power to you, and screw the dirty hippies of the world.</p>

<p>Argh, I definitely know a lot of annoyingly sheltered rich people. I just wish I could've avoided them, at least until college.</p>

<p>Another thing I don't get--the complete disdain many bourgeoisie have for all blue collar workers. For some, that extends to anyone who can change a lightbulb or turn a screw.</p>

<p>True story: My parents and I are at a relative's house. My dad's a carpenter, and works mostly on furniture building. My aunt launches into a huge monologue about how she's "so happy that all [her] children have such wonderful, fulfilling jobs, making a difference in the world and working on the frontiers of their fields..." then turns to my dad and says "...but you don't have that, do you?"</p>

<p>As if it's not important to have electricity, a house that doesn't fall down, heat, water....and <em>obviously</em> people who supply heat for a school of 3000 students during a snowstorm or maintain the power grid aren't doing anything useful or good and can't get job satisfaction. Oy.</p>

<p>My aunt acts like all of this is completely unskilled labor, yet she can't do any of it. She asked my dad to look at her kitchen cabinet, said she "thought there was something wrong with the hinge." She was going to have someone come and look at it, hauling their huge truck up here with all their tools. Turns out a screw was loose on the hinge--all she had to do was bend down to see that. She even had a screwdriver in the house. Seriously, this kind of thing drives me nuts.</p>

<p>Okay, no one shoud ever have to apoligize for being rich, but if you're rich you should NEVER EVER whine about people giving you a hard time because you're rich. You have money, buy them off or something you tightass.</p>

<p>As for krbanks comment about rich folks looking down on blue collar labour, that is so true. Despite the fact that many blue collar workers make a good amount of money, sometimes more than their university graduate counterparts, they get shat upon by too many people in society, not just rich people but society in general.</p>

<p>First off, you should get a reality check and spend a day with a medical student or a medical doctor. Everything you said in this statement is entirely false. You obviously know absolutely nothing about the medical profession because every single day, doctors are faced with choices that they cannot look up in a medical book. For example, a doctor has to make the choice of whether to get someone who is in a vegetative state off of life support or not if the patient did not make a living will. No one can make these choices for the doctor, it is entirely up to him/her. Basically, the patients life is in the doctor's hands and that's a huge responsibility. I think that you should show more respect for doctors because they have spent 10+ years in school, spent a lot of money, and made a commitment to their profession. I don't think anyone should bash doctors or the medical students who have made this commitment. I also think you don't realize how competitive it is in medical school because they purposely want to weed out the students who don't have the commitment to the profession. So you have no choice but to work hard if you want to make it as a doctor.</p>

<p>Btw, I got this email from someone who is older than me and knows a lot more than you and me about the medical field and it's pretty interesting. I think everyone who wants to be in the medical profession should read this.</p>

<p>I know you said you want to go to medical school.
Medical school is one of the hardest types to go to, and make it. I kinda think a person has to have a knack for medical science, or they are just gonna end up at best, a "GP".</p>

<p>It is an admirable goal to want to go to medical school. But it's also one of the hardest professions to succeed, and make real money at.</p>

<p>I had a friend who went to medical school.
He got average grades, and his final exam score was mid 80's.</p>

<p>He applied at a hospital, and the director LAUGHED at him, because of his grades and score.
He told him, "no one touches a person in this hospital as a surgeon, unless they have all A's
and a final exam of at least 95."</p>

<p>Pretty high standards.
Most people that go to medical school end up as a General Practitioner-
there are so many doctors out there, that hospitals only are going to hire the creme de la creme.</p>

<p>But if you want to be a doc, follow your dreams.
And remember that you have to be GREAT in school because "okay" simply will not cut it-</p>
