Spop dorms ?

For SPOP, do you choose the residence halls you stay in? and your roommate?
Also, what goes on at SPOP? Thanks!

SPOP is completely random. Roomates and halls are selected for you. SPOP is basically an intro to UCI. You play games to connect with new people, register for classes, learn about the school. Honestly, I only slept like 3 hours at SPOP. Stayed up till 4 to play games with the other people. So tired, I still have no idea what was being said at the seminar the next day lol. Something about safety(?). The important part though is to get classes. Make sure you choose an early SPOP date.

What time is SPOP over on the second day?

When does registration happen? The first day or the second day? Do you get to choose classes, teachers, and the time then?

I think spop ends at around 5 on the second day but I’m not sure/I forget.

You register for classes on the first day and yes, that’s when you choose classes/teachers/time.

Thanks! Are you basically separated in a group and you stay with that group the entire time?

I assume that means that academic counseling also happens on the first day. If registration is on the first day, doesn’t that mean you have very little time to go through your options (ratemyprof, times, etc.)?

You can start picking your classes way before SPOP:

[Schedule of Classes](http://websoc.reg.uci.edu/)

Classes for fall quarter should be posted by mid May.

Do people take their GEs in a certain order? For example, everyone takes so and so in their first quarter, and then the following courses the next quarter or is it totally scattered and up to preference?

the latter. There are many potential GE courses offered in every discipline each quarter.

I heard getting the classes you want now are really tough. Any tips? I’ve already been advised to go to the earliest SPOP date. Are there some classes that everyone wants to do first? Is getting a good professor better or getting a good time better? In other words, does the professor matter that much?

I don’t agree that it’s that tough if you sign up right when your enrollment window opens most quarters. Certainly if you enroll during one of the first SPOP sessions it will not be difficult.

I would take pretty much any class you want that will fulfills GE requirements. Depending on your major, there are probably some lower division requirements that you need to take so you can progress to other classes. I would look it up in the online UCI catalogue.

Though this rarely happens with intro courses, try to make sure you’re taking any classes that are important for you (perhaps classes that are prerequisites for other future courses) but are only offered during Fall quarter.

It’s not too difficult to get the class you want if it’s a requirement. They reserve some seats for freshman during enrollment in lower-division classes.

I personally think a professor can make a difference if they’re on the extreme end - e.g. really good or really bad.

Everyone wants to take the easy classes, so those fill up first.

Hi spookyaction, so does it mean we could actually start signing up classed on our own in May online? I am asking because I won’t be in the country for the summer and I was really worried about my class schedule. I know I could apply for exemption, but I guess I would be signing up after everyone else if I don’t go to SPOP. Thank you so much!

^No, you cannot sign up until SPOP. You can begin looking up classes/plan a schedule in May but cannot actually register until SPOP.

How many classes/units do people normally take a quarter? What if you took AP classes? And I heard some languages don’t count for credit. For example, if you took AP Chinese and got a 5, you still have to take the placement test to see if you’re exempt?

Do you know if it’s mandatory for parents to go (someone at Discover said it was)?

@triangular38

It’s not. It says on their Orientation website that it’s optional for parents. If they do go, they have to pay also.

are you guys going to be going with parents?

Will bringing a parent hold me back from meeting some people and/or having a good time?

I’m not going with a parent, mainly because of the money, and also because I can’t really be myself with parents, you know? You are usually a different person with your friends than with a parent. I don’t usually do sleepovers, unless it’s at my cousins place at UCR, so I don’t really know how the expeience is. Another reason I wanna experience this on my own.
