SPOP Trip Question

So I was looking at ways to get down to Irvine for my SPOP session and there are like 3 options that I'm trying to get an opinion about.

1) Drive down to Irvine the day before (I'm in the Bay Area so around 6 hours) and find a motel to stay in.
2) Fly down to Irvine the day before but if I do this, I won't have a car. So I'd have to take a taxi/shuttle to a motel and then a taxi to Irvine.
3) Fly down to Irvine the day of but the earliest flight I see arrives at 7:35 and sign in is from 8-8:45. I know the airport is relatively close but is that enough time to get down there?

My parents weren't originally planning on going since I thought I'd be flying but now they might have to. Driving would probably be the cheapest followed behind flying the day of but long drives are always a pain.

I think an hour is plenty of time to get there considering it takes me an hour to drive from LA to Irvine. You won’t have to go look for luggage either since you’ll just have carry-on luggage. And even if you’re late a bit, I doubt that they won’t let you in if you come in at 8:50.

I would do day before. Airport service is really inconsistent, and even if your flight says it’ll arrive at 7:30, you might not be outta there 'til 9.

Day before drive/flight is much safer.

I agree with tama. The airport is really close. You could easily get to campus in 5-10 minutes with a taxi.

i think it’ll take you only like 10-20 mins to get to irvine from the airport because it takes me 30 mins to get to irvine and i live only 20 mins away from LAX. i’m sure you’ll be fine

Hmm I guess I was worrying about the reliability of the flight. I’m flying Southwest and I have no idea if they cancel/are delayed often. I’m sure if the fight does arrive on time, I can make it easy but I’m not sure if I’ll get delayed.

southwest is usually on time. i travel with them all the time and i don’t remember their being delayed ever.

Last year my daughter flew in the day before (she’s also from the Bay Area). The trip from John Wayne Airport to UCI is short (~10-15 minutes cab ride, ~$15 incl tip), but the real risk is whether the flight is close to on time. Morning flights I think are typically on time, but if your specific flight is late, you’re out of luck. She didn’t want to take the chance.

i say option #3

John Wayne is close enough if Southwest is on time and you aren’t checking luggage. But you could also fly down the day before and stay overnight on campus. [UC Irvine Student Housing - Hotel UCI - Home](http://www.housing.uci.edu/hoteluci/)
The accommodation is student housing,–sophomores and up–but you might learn more from the students you’ll meet there than you will at SPOP.
