Sport Recruitment

My neice is currently a junior in high school and is starting her college search. She has a huge list of colleges and wants to start narrowing them down based on whether she can be recruited to play basketball. The issue is that many of the colleges she is looking at are in southern states and she lives in Ohio and she does not have money to travel to all of them. How does she get a coach to know she is interested without spending a ton of money with a company that will put together a demo tape and recruitment information packet.

She has contact information for the head and assistant coaches- is it as easy as just calling them up and saying hello and letting them know who she is. Or is there a more formal process she should follow? I know there are specific rules by the NCAA that she must follow, but don't know much more than that and would like to help her out as my sister is a very busy single mom.

Thanks for any advise from others who have been through this before!

Suggest you repost over on the Athletic Recruitment forum. I’m sure they can help you with some advice.

^ good advice … when you post there it would be helpful to share what level (DI, DII, DIII) she would like to play as the recruiting works very differently by division … the NCAA rules on recruiting can be found here … [Public Home Page - NCAA.org](http://www.ncaa.org)

FYI - your niece does not need a fancy recruiting DVD … a home movie will work fine.

You also do not need to pay money to hire a recruiting service. You can do that yourself. You just need to contact coaches and be proactive in the process. My son just went through this and normally a letter or email is the initial form of contact. The coaches usually take it from there.
