How good and accessible are those at Cal? Are the facilities clean and do they have convenient working hours? Are they crowded? How hard or easy to get into popular recreational sports, dance or fitness classes (like ballroom dance, yoga, pilates, sailing, fencing etc.)? Is the cost of fitness classes included into tuition or you pay something extra?

There are several swimming pools at Cal, but I couldn't conclude from the web-site, are they all outdoors or are there some indoors ones? Where do students swim in winter?

Are there some "outdoors" clubs, do some organized camping, backpacking or ski trips exist for all interested?

There is a PE department in Cal, but there are no PE classes included into General Ed requirements. Is it common for whatever (non-PE ;)) majors to take PE classes? How are they different from the classes offered by recreational ftness facilities?

Thank you in advance for any helpful comments.

facilities are clean, they can be crowded depending on what you're doing. things like volleyball and badmington and table tennis arent always available. the cost of some fitness classes are not included. hours for the main sports facility (rsf) goes up to 12.

i believe hearst gym has an indoor swimming pool.

Fencing is a student-run club, and they're completely open to anyone and everyone that wants to come to practice. They provide all equipment and you can even compete in intercollegiate tournaments from the get go.

I really enjoy it. ^_^

A lot of other popular classes are just that: popular. They fill up fast and are often first come, first serve with their spots. I'm not familiar with anything other than the fencing club, though, so someone else would be better able to address that.

Been there (on Cal Day). No, it doesn't, the pool is outdoors. Didn't manage to get into other gyms/pools there (were too tired). Who knows anything about them - are there at least one that is indoors (for rainy days ;))?
