<p>On the west coast, you have a lot in the Pac-10 of major state school sports programs but also some high powered academics (UW, UCLA, Berkeley)</p>
<p>Also on the west coast, two major private schools for sports/science are USC and Stanford, both BCS/major conference members in football and men’s basketball, and also Pac-10/MPSF powers in olympic sports (tennis, soccer, water polo, volleyball, etc). A very high number of other major college football powers, not just on the west coast, are state schools, though there are a few others.</p>
