Sports at BS?

Is it harder to play sports at BS than at a public school? I’m interested in basketball, soccer, and track, but I’m not sure if I’d be out of my realm. Culver’s soccer team is good but I’m a pretty decent defender and I’ve played for years. I’m okay at basketball and it’s my favorite sport. I’m the best girl discus thrower at my school and one of the best shotputters. I’m worried, though. Are the sports at boarding schools way better than public schools? Will I struggle to make the teams?

I think that it really depends on what schools you are looking at and how they compare to your current school. If you are applying to a small arts school the sports obviously aren’t going to be as good if you apply to a larger class a school, so it really depends.

As stated above, the answer is “It depends.” It depends on the school, it depends on the sport. At most schools, one can make a team, but whether you will get playing time on a particular varsity team will depend.

Some schools will put you on a team even if you have never played a sport before. Others, will have “cut” policies. I prefer the schools that have mandatory team participation and, therefore, provide opportunities for kids who have limited experience so that they can learn a sport and participate. I view that as one of the “plus” points for boarding school.

For those kids looking, this could be added to your list of factors to consider when deciding where to apply.
