Sports at HC

How are the sports teams at Holy Cross? Are the games well-attended?

The only sport that draws a lot of student interest and are often filled to capacity are men's basketball games. They have very good football and soccer teams that also get decent crowds. Both teams narrowly missed winning the league championship by 1 point.

Yesterday, the HC men's basketball team beat last year's Patriot League champion and NCAA tournament team, American University, 71-62 in front of a packed house, home crowd of 3672. The game was on national television on ESPNU.

hey 1980collegegrad, is holy cross bball ever going to be on tv in the near future???

I watched the HC-Army game tonight which was very close but HC won. The huge game will be HC-American on 2/21 in DC as they both are in first place in the league.

Here is a great description of the atmosphere at the Holy Cross-Bucknell game by a Bucknell player who is doing the NY Times Sports Blog this year:

Going to Holy Cross has been quite the experience for me throughout my three seasons at Bucknell. Playing them at home has been a lot of fun too, but the journey up to Worcester, has been especially memorable. Losing there twice in my freshman season, our lone regular-season conference loss, and the league championship game, was heartbreaking. Last year was chaotic to say the least. Amidst ejections, three players receiving bloody noses, and a close game, it was not an easy one to forget. This year was another exciting contest, thanks in large part to the great atmosphere. When they come to Bucknell, the arena is filled with fans in orange clothing. At H.C, the vibrant gym is jam-packed, and the stands appear to be a sea of purple (of course this doesn’t include the many fans who do travel to support us and sit behind our bench). The fans, more so than anywhere else we play, always get quite enthused, yelling all the insults and verbal abuse one would come to expect in a hostile environment. I love it though. It’s fun, and adds excitement to an already big game.
