Sports at Lawrence

My son is not in a sport at Lawrence, but I would be interested in hearing from students who are in sports at Lawrence (or parents who have kids in sports there). What have you found the experience to be like?

Hi, I’m not a student, am a parent of a prospective student, but can tell you two things:
First, we attended an admitted students’ weekend in April which included a panel discussion with parents of current students. One couple had a daughter on the swim team, and they were extremely positive, said she is thriving and has a wonderful coach and teammates.
Second, my son is a fencer and plans to join the team at Lawrence which is one of the few small colleges in the country with NCAA fencing. He met the coach and assistant coach during a campus visit last year, also had dinner with some team members. We met briefly again with the assistant coach while visiting last month. I was VERY impressed, they clearly take their training seriously but also are concerned about the whole person, making sure the team members are doing well academically and socially.

Hi, I am also the parent of a prospective student who is looking to apply for Fall 2014.
I’m wondering if anyone knows anything about the Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams at Lawrence. My daughter is hoping to continue running at a D3 LAC and play in the Orchestra so Lawrence seems like it would be a good fit. Thanks to anyone with information about running at Lawrence!

My daughter is going to be attending Lawrence this Fall and is actually going in August to begin training with the Cross Country team! So far, communications with the coach have been very positive. They seem to indicate that they support “multi-interested” students at Lawrence. My daughter is going to attempt duel degree and running. We heard that they do have runners who are enrolled in the conservatory and they work it out. Duel degree may prove to be more difficult but one of their postcards says “Where someone will say-no one has ever tried that-and they’ll be talking about you”…so she is going to give it a go! If you have not heard about Lawrence’s retreat center, Bjorklunden, go on their website and check it out! The team trains there and, as far as I’m concerned, that would be reason alone to join the team!! Absolutely beautiful!

Thanks so much for your reply Clarinet13mom! We are visiting at the end of next week on one of their open house days and we are really looking forward to it. It sounds like a great place. I was hoping to hear that the xc team runs at Bjorklunden  That sounds like such a cool place, what a great asset for the students there. Nice to hear that they try to work around the students’ schedules also. How early in August will your daughter be going to start training there? Thanks again for the info, and good luck to your daughter!

Sorry for the late reply… I don’t follow CC as much as I used to now that my daughter is decided! I found it very helpful though, and always lots of positive feedback about Lawrence. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your visit. My daughter will be moving in mid August, with all the other athletes. Classes start mid September. She became interested in Lawrence for duel degree but the opportunity to run was an added bonus!
