Sports at W&M

Collegiate sports is something thats very important to me. How would you guys rate the overall school spirit of those at William and Mary? Do most students show up for the games?

How is the intramural program? Is it widely participated in?

Thanks so much

We have decent school spirit but we are somewhat lacking in people showing up to games. Intramural is widely participated in, however.

ok thanks

any other opinions?

in general, people are proud they go to W&M, but as mentioned, some of the support for sports teams is lacking. The basketball team had one its best years ever last year, and they drew like roughly 500 students a game. Football had a rough year last year. We were really good in 04, and have kinda continued in the fan support from that run, but attendence started to drop among students at the end of last year. 2 years ago, when the JMU came, 3000 students showed up for the first game under our new lights. The atmosphere for that was amazing. 3000 students is more than half our undergraduate population, so the students do come out and support sometimes.

in all sports, W&M has the most championships of anyone in the conference.

thanks soccerguy

what about intramurals? Do you guys find that most of your peers are athletic, and were prob varsity athletes?

Yes, there are a lot of jockish students at W&M who played varsity sports in high school. You should have no problem finding a group of athletes that play the sport you're interested in. The intramural program is one of the best--Joe Tighe does an amazing job. Since graduating from W&M, I've played a number of IM sports at grad schools, and none of them came close to the level of organization or quality or participation as W&M's.

intramurals are very popular, and skill levels vary widely, but some are VERY competitive.

There are tons of former varsity athletes at W&M. I've never really thought about this before, but when I think about the people I know, a huge number of them played for their high schools. Some of them play club, some of them play intramurals, and some of them move onto other things. IMO, you will find the same at any top school, where doing well in the classroom by itself isn't enough.
