I'm going to college in the fall and planned on majoring in Sports Management. I've heard people say it's a waste so I want to know what I should do.

I am a huge sports fan and just want a job in sports at the college or High School level. I don't care about being a rich and famous person trying to get to the Professional level. I looked up sports management and it seemed like the type of jobs I would like to have.

I would still like to do something with sports but what major would best for getting a job in this?

I don’t know too much about it, but some of my friends were interested in Athletic Training as a major, you could look into that as well. Of course, it would be a bit more from the medical side of sports as opposed to the management side.

Kinesiology? Physical and occupational therapy (which are typically master’s programs) also can be closely related to sports, but as Lavenderan noted, all three are more medical than managerial in nature.

Ever seen Moneyball? Try Statistics. Or maybe try to minor in it. You’d be suprised how much statistics is applicable to sports. I’m a baseball fan and a numbers nut by nature, so I see real value (read: power) in linking the two. You could be the “Nick Jonas” working with the management staff talking through making huge team-related decisions based on research that you’ve done, and then if you learn enough there you could move up.

Otherwise, if Sports Management is what really sounds the most interesting to you and you really feel you’d be happy with that, then don’t lake on it just becuase others are giving you a negative vibe about it. I’ve been through the ringer of life a few times, and I can honestly advise you to do what makes you happy.

Do a minor in something slightly useful in the sports industry (marketing/media?) or even think about double majoring if you’re not 100% on the Sport Management deal.

Majoring in Sports Management isn’t necessarily a waste, as long as you choose a decent enough program with good networking and internship opportunities. You could also major in statistics, economics, marketing, or management and still end up in a similar place.

The University of Oregon has a nationally-ranked sports business program, as well as a Sports Marketing Center that can be accessed by students of any major. Not to mention an established connection with Oregon-based companies like Nike and Columbia, and one of the most popular brands in the NCAA. If you want to truly work in sports and obtain a career through your education, consider a route through a school like this one, with ample academic and career opportunities.
