Sports & Harvard

Hi,

If one has great stats, and great ecs, but no sports, will that hurt?

It’s fine as long as you have other ECs, and one or two particular ECs that you excel at. Playing sports is just a common EC.

Thanks, but wouldn’t it be weighted more? For example, a student with great scores, GPA, and national distinction in an academic EC, but no sport: wouldn’t he be viewed as an unathletic nerd? Sorry to use such wording, but I would classify myself in this way.

Not necessarily. He might be a “fat lazy nerd”, but he might have another good EC, like being a great musician or the president of the school newspaper. The superstar jock athlete may not have any musical sense and has no sort of mind for journalism, and instead of being a “fat lazy nerd” he’d be a “juiced-up ignorant unsophisticated nerd”.

Bottom line: have a good EC. It’s doesn’t have to be a sport. Hey, for all it matters, you don’t have to have ANY sport.
