Okay, so I guess I'm not much of the "sport" type? I actually love to play basketball and I always do in my freetime with my friends, but my school's basketball team is super competitive and therefore it is difficult to make the team (coupled w/ the fact i am asian.) I did make the c-team as a sophomore, and that is the only school sport i ever did. I won the Most Inspirational Award for the basketball program though, because of my hard work. I ended up not trying out as a junior because of course work.

So couple questions:
1) Should I include this sport in my application, and is there anyway I can mention the award??

2) Will not having any sports really affect my application, if I am in multiple other clubs with leadership positions, community service, etc.?

It honestly won’t have too much effect on your application since you quit by junior year. It will not adversely affect your application if you don’t have any sports.

But basketball is one of my “passions.” I LOVE to play with my friends, join
an annual church tournament, recreational leagues, etc. All this I don’t plan to put on my app. though haha. But I am a coach of a B+G Basketball league for 3+ seasons.

Also, my c-team coach is my history teacher, and I am planning to get a letter of rec. from him. He LOVED the way i played (dived on the floor, drew charges, hustle) and Im gonna ask him to incorporate that into my teacher rec. as showing my passion and hard work in areas <-------- good idea?

Okay so you think writing about basketball is okay, even though I have only one year of c-team to show for it?? Its one of my bigger regrets not playing JV this year… (woulda only been a bench player anyway)

yea, if it’s ur true passion i think u should go for it. I wrote about my interests in different sports even though i never participated in one.

Absolutely include your basketball EC. It is part of who you are. Competitive colleges are looking for more than kids who look perfect on paper. They are also looking for the types of kids who will join an intramural BB team and be a social force at the school. The fact that you coach is a big plus as it shows a high level of responsibility to be in charge of a team of kids. 3 years of coaching is a big commitment and one you should be proud of. My son had similar experience to yours: played frosh and soph only, won an award one of those years, and then went on to coach kids for 3 years. He talked about BB in one of his essays because it was important to him. Be yourself.

i was actually in the same situation last app season… i didn’t play basketball for my school but i played like 10+ hrs per week w/ friends, pretty much same situation as urs. what i did was that i put it in the additional info section and explained a lil.
it didn’t really count as EC in the adcoms eyes… i mean it doesn’t belong in the EC area, but it is definitely an EC i love to do. so i put it there to let them know
