Sports Management

Ok so it is almost time for me to apply EDII, but before I did I guess I guess I'm having some cold feet. I want to major in business, and hopefully eventually work for a sports team or D1 athletics dept, but Richmond doesnt have SM as a major. I originally didnt want to major in SM because since the sports industry is so competitive and if I couldnt secure a job, my degree would be worthless. I guess why I'm writing is to see if people think I would better be served applying to a school that has a SM major and would give me more of a centralized focus, or applying to a business school that is more well respected like Richmond and then hoping for an internship with a team or maybe even with the spiders athletic dept. and still getting a job that way. I like everything else about UR, and it's definitely my #1 choice, but I guess I just want to be sure about this before going ED. Maybe some of the parents on here could ask their kids or something, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Alot. Go spiders

First, our daughter is at UR and loves it. Fantastic school. Their business school undergrad is highly ranked in USNWR. Our son looked seriously into the SM programs around the country. If that is what you really want to do, you need to apply to the schools that offer that program. It is a hard field to break into and only a few really make it to the top, the kind of job everyone wants (“Jerry McGuire”!!). Lots of these majors end up as country club managers or high school coaches or such…Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I think the dream job is why many pursue this major. But…again, if you really want that major, you need to look at Ohio University, Bowling Green University (both are top ranked colleges in the country that offer SM), and many more. We discovered Rice had a fairly new program. Anyway, that is my advice for what it is worth. Our son decided to pursue undergrad business and has applied to 9 schools, so we are in the wait mode. Good luck!!

rams, one thing I can say about UR, is that there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with the AD as a student. Getting that exposure while you’re in school can be a real advantage. You can always get into sports management with a business major, but I would imagine it would be harder to do other things with a SM major.

The school also has some nice connections with pro sports. PGA Commissioner is a UR alum, Lakers GM’s son played football at UR, GM for the Redskins is a former UR player, Todd McShay is an alum. Those are ones just off the top off my head.
