Sports Question

Is there a certain requirement for a sport to be a varsity sport? Lacrosse is not sanctioned by the state, and our team has just loose affiliation to the school, but our team and the teams around us have always referred to themselves as JV and Varsity. I guess what I'm asking is, is being sanctioned by the state what gives a sport its varsity status?

there’s no doubt that lacrosse is a sport, but i think it depends on how closely it is tied to your school
does your school’s athletic director oversee the program?
do you have to turn in a permission slip to the school in order to play?
is it listed on any official school documents?

if the answer is a no to all 3 of those, i dont think it is considered a school sport (ergo not varsity level) but could still be considered a sport.
that’s my guess anyhow

If it is a club sport, that bears your high school’s name on it, but you or your parents have to pay to play on, it is considered a Varsity sport. Our lacrosse team is considered part of MSLA but bears our high schools name. Varsity letters are presented through the school.

If the team on which you play is organized through another source, it would probably be listed as an activity with a notation on the level of competition along with an explanation about your league. If you are using the common application, there is a place where you can go into further details about your activities.
