Talk about getting funds for the athlete...in my D's varsity team, the students are having to put some money toward their sports training activities! We are not only not getting funds, she is having to pay some out!

Since ther eare so few scholarships in many sports (no money club and d3) the way to go is merit aid and financial aid. If you need help, many schools might want your child to play that are at a lower academic tier then you might normally consider. There sports programs may be as good or better than another school.
At many of these schools you can get merit aid for your grades, if money is an issue, and you really want to play a sport this is a way to go. YOu can get a almost free ride based on academics, and still play your sport.

Somemom,

You want to be very careful here. Pursing financial aid for an athlete outside official channels (such as through alumni) could put both the student and the college at risk. The NCAA is very specific about what types of financial aid are legal. We all know that there are schools and coaches that break the rules, but when they get caught it is usually the student who get hurt the most. The coaches just move on to other jobs and the alumni just spend their money elsewhere, but the kids are abandonded by the institution.

The NCAA publishes a great guideline for parents and student-athletes and is available at www.ncaa.org (not dot com). Any parent who has a child considering playing sports in college (at whatever level) should download it.

We definitely don't want to do anything "wrong." Just looking for the unusual options that we may not have discovered. Since #1 sport is club, the NCAA rules would not be in conflict, but there are no $$ offered at any fine Bay area schools. I am looking for ideas on other legitimate ways to fund a huge tuition at an outstanding school :) Bear in mind, I don't know the school's offer yet, just don't want to miss any deadlines whilst we wait.
