Sports Rivals

Who are Wake's biggest rivals? I need to know who to boo. ;)

Well, Wake has been called “Switzerland” by some because we don’t really have any major rivalries and nobody really “hates” us the way they might UNC or Duke - in fact, I know a lot of UNC/State/Duke fans that say Wake is their “second favorite” team.

Although it’s not a rivalry really, I would say that our biggest matchups are usually the instate ACC schools - UNC, Duke, NCSU. (Personally, I don’t think you can go wrong with booing Duke :))

OK, thanks. (Living in Maryland, I’m used to booing Duke. )

D would agree 100% – especially re: Duke.

Dook, UNC and NC State

others may alternate the first two, but for those of us in the State of NC, nothing like beating the Tar Heels or the Blue Devils. NC State was a traditional key rival when Wake Forest was located just North of Raleigh.

^ Yep, the State rivalry is underrated. Easter Monday used to be a state holiday because the State/Wake baseball game was always held on that day…

We attended a freshman welcome event last summer, and the speaker told a story about a new dean hired at Wake who was making some welcoming remarks about how excited he was to be at Wake Forest - and how he commented on the “gorgeous Carolina blue sky” - which elicited a gasp/boo from the audience as that was more of a UNC reference. I’m guessing he did not repeat that faux pas.

UNC and Duke, in that order, though it’s sort of sad to consider someone your main rival who doesn’t consider you a rival in return. UNC and Duke clearly focus their intensity on one another.

Something that illustrates this is that Wake fans will storm the court when we beat Duke or UNC. At Cameron Indoor or in the Dean Dome, the favor will not be returned.

I have also developed a hatred of Clemson after this:

I also have a hatred of Boston College, primarily because they are located near Boston and really have no business being in the ACC.

willmingtonwave- I know what you are talking about, I witnessed that Clemson game! I also have a “hatred” of orange now…:)

BC would really be a good rivalry to cultivate. Wake and BC are something close to Southern and Northern cousins. Similar academics, beautiful campuses, historic connections to denominations, preppy-leaning cultures - and as far as I know BC doesn’t have an exclusive rival-to-rival relationship with any other conference school.

In state are the main rivals. Outside of that the division rivalries of BC, FSU, MD, and Clemson are all growing and interesting over the last couple years. GT is not a rival, but we are unfortunately paired with them in basketball.

For Football they have been trying to cultivate a rivalry with Vandy as we have a contract to play them for the next decade or so.
