Sports: State qualifier

I have a specific question concerning sports as an extracurricular. I have been involved in cross-country since freshman year. I love running. I've gotten my varsity letter for 2 years. This year, our team is actually going to be good (have a chance at going to the State Meet). The coach takes 10 people there (7 actually run, other 3 are alternates). If I train really, really hard, I can have a chance at taking the #9 or #10 spot, and thus going to state. This would be such an awesome experience. However, I was wondering if there was any other benefit of doing this? I wouldn't be running at all, as I would be an alternate.
For those of you experienced athletes, could I still call myself a "State qualifier for varsity cross-country" on my college application?

if you’re coach is taking you then you qualify. so yes

if the app gives you room to describe the activity then you can tell some more about it like

“helped my team take (insert place here…1,2 ect) at state meet.”
