How important are sports for top ivys and other top colleges

what, and since the whole thing is on a honor system how can colleges check?

No EC's, sports or otherwise, are required for any college.

And don't you DARE even THINK of lying on your app.

Sports are important for small schools that have to field teams, providing your sport is one that the college competes in. Playing a sport and intending to play in college, even if you're not a star, will help you in admissions at most small colleges.

At schools like the ivies and those that get thousands of applicants - and field their teams by recruitment for the most part - having a sport as an EC is no better or worse than any other EC.
If you're good enough to be a recruited athlete at these schools, (Div. I valuable player) then that can help a lot.

And yes, colleges do check. The coaches know one another, and if you looked like a promising whatever player, it's likely the coach would pick up the phone and call your high school's coach. They would also expect to see your name on the roster of the various meets where your high school competes.
