Sports?

Okay, so I really want to do a sport next year. At my school, the only sports they offer that I’m semi-interested in (or would be able to be decent at), are cross country, track, tennis, and soccer. The issue is, cross country is the one that I want to do the most, as I am an avid runner. The only problem is, I am an asthmatic. It isn’t that bad during the warmer times of year, but once it is late fall or early spring, it gets horrible. Like to the point where I can run for hours straight during the summer, but once late fall hits, and I can barely run for 5 minutes. Our cross country team still runs during that time of year, so I’m cautious about joining. Any advice?

The track at my school starts in the spring, so that would be less of an issue if I joined then. However, I prefer running long distance, so I think cross country would be a better fit.

Hmmm are the important meets for cross country during the fall? If so, that might be a problem.

Also, would it be possible to run the longer track distances instead as a compromise?

I have asthma, and despite that, I enjoyed running cross country during the late fall in New England…

I found that it was pretty helpful, and everyone was already half-dead anyway, so it wasn’t that bad. However, I’d ask the coach if there are asthmatic kids on the team and how they’ve taken to it.

Anyway, I’d recommend it, especially since it helped greatly reduce my asthma to being a total afterthought for me.

That’s really good to know Apollo. I really want to join. I’ll see about joining this fall (they won’t let us join in the middle of the year).

I’d encourage you to be prepared to start running several miles more than what you usually run…it’s a little difficult/jarring at first.

That sounds like a good idea. One of my friends on the team says that conditioning for it was killer.

Do the 3200m race in track, but then again 8 laps could be super boring compared to 5000m on a trail.

The only way to be cool is to be in sports. Once you’re on a team, you become elite in the school.

@Orioles21 Nice joke hahaha… That’s true with football and basketball. Not golf, tennis, and sports that aren’t paid much attention to lol

If you really want to do cross country go for it! About the medical condition, talk to your coach and explain the situation. He/She should be able to help you out some how. I knew people in high school who had asthma but were able to compete (one even got a scholarship!). So it’s not impossible to do. The first thing would be to talk to your coach and figure something out.

Good luck! Sports are a great way to get involved, and they’re a lot of fun.

Hey I’m in golf so I get it

I actually decided to join track!

They added me to the team.
