Sports

How big of a difference does it make if you don't play any sports? And if so what kind of EC's would you need? I must be a lot. I'm playing tennis in the spring but I was just wondering if there was a large difference and what could take it's place.

In general, sports are good if you’re good at the sport. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t play a sport that you like because you’re not really great at it, but don’t expect it to make a big difference come admissions-time because it’s not really that impressive that you made your high school sports team. If you’re good at your sport and you’ve gotten to the state level or above, then it starts reflecting much more positively on your application.

In general, focus on a couple of impressive, interesting extracurriculars rather than a slew of boring, run-of-the-mill ECs (e.g. those kids that join dozens of clubs aren’t really helping their admissions chances).

I’ve always heard that it is bad to have a laundry list of ECs. Focus in on the ECs your passionate about, not the ones you just joined to beef up your application. Even if you only list 1 EC but you put a lot of time and effort into it, that is fine.

What qualifies as an EC that is “impressive”? I’m really involved with my local FBLA, going to every national conference, fundraisers, etc. So?

Thank you for that article ymon, that was fantastic.

Answer my question please?

Ok I think we’ve answered your question? Every applicant is different. Talk about your passions.

Oh my bad!
What i MEANT is answer the question i had right above ymons post haha
Sorry

Read Dean J’s Blog Post from today for your answer :)

Thanks for that Shillyshally. That post cleared up many of my misconceptions. My parents always tell me that I have 0 Ec’s so I won’t get into any of the colleges I want. However, I work 25hrs a week at a job that I’ve held since 8th grade. It may sound weird but I enjoy working there and have made numerous friends through my job.

^
That doesn’t sound weird at all! And could anyone link me to the post?

Thanks Dean J
So how would you define “depth”?

By “depth” I’m assuming Dean J means dedication. Anyone could have a list of 10+ EC’s (and many people do) but it does not mean they put an effort into their activities. The deans want to see an applicant who shows commitment to something that they find passionate, not just something you join so you can slap it on your college app. Also if you don’t know much information about applying to UVA, I would highly suggest reading Dean J’s blog. It’s a very helpful rescource.
