I cant believe i got in for spring 06 and not fall 05. That sux. Should i even go to maryland and harass the admissions department to let me in? Or go to harfor community and tranfer? Or just screw maryland and go to one of the other schools i was accepted to.

My D was just WL. But she wasnt offered a spring admission in the letter. Are you WL for the fall also, or just offered a spring admission?

waitlisted for fall but offered spring admission

Same with my D. I've only heard of a couple of others who are waitlisted for fall but accepted in spring. D. has contacted admissions twice via mail in pursuing getting in for fall (and will call in a few weeks)but not expecting any miracles. She feels lucky to get in at all considering she's out of state & low test scores, so she is pleased. If she doesn't get in off the fall waitlist, she'll will attend Shepherd University in the fall to take some courses that will transfer to UMD. I'd like to tell anyone whose not sure if they want to go to Md. to NOT GO, so she'll get in....haha...but I won't. Hopefully notification will come mid May.

kimmibee16: just curious...where else did you apply and get accepted, rejected/waitlisted? What are your stats? Intended major, etc? Just wondering how similar they are to my D.'s stats...

my stats are 1130/4.25 (weighted). Varsity cheerleading (2yrs), varsity volleyball(1yr). varsity tennis (2yrs), class vp (9th and 10th grades), model un, national youth leadership forum on medicine 2001.

intended major: Communications (1st choice) and english(2nd choice)

accepted at Northeastern, Loyola Chicago, Colgate, George Mason
rejected at Fordham but they gave me instant admissions to marymount college

Also i'm in-state, but a lot of times UMD will waitlist instate ppl to make room for out of state ppl

Very similar stats w/ D. ACT score= your 1130 sat but your gpa is higher (3.46uw). Cheerleader (2yrs) dance team(2yrs) Senior Class Historian, Show Choir (3yrs), 11 year dancer, 12 year member local theatre, camp counselor for special needs students, Special Olympics volunteer, and all the other usual ec's. She is out of state (WV) and will get in state tuition because her major (dance) isn't offered in our state. That was her hook, especially being the first from WV to ask for that program at MD. Also accepted to Towson, Shepherd and other smaller schools. She can't wait to go...good luck to you.

desvw

I'm surprised that your D would want to start Maryland in the Spring. How about if she loves Shepherd and wants to stay there (is it a commuter school?). What would she have done if she didnt get into Maryland at all? Aren't you worried about her coming in as a new student in January, kinda like a transfer student? My daughter was also Wl at Maryland, but got in our state school and 4 others. She was also WL at Northeastern and offered spring admission. But I don't think she would accept a spring admission, even in her 1st choice school. I hope that your daughter does get in for the fall. I have read your posts and I can see that you are a concerned mother, and I hope it all works out for you and your daughter.

THANKS! We hope she gets in too! Shepherd was her safety....you can live there or commute. She probably would have gone to Towson (they have dance) or Shenandoah as a last resort if she didn't get in Md. Or would have tried to transfer to MD after a year. One day in Jan. when I called admissions to ask a question, the person I spoke with (not a counselor) told me her daughter got waitlisted for fall and entered in the spring. I thought that was strange and asked her some questions about it. She said it worked out great for her d. She took courses at a local cc for one semester and when she got to MD got in a great dorm and met some very nice people. So I wasn't really too concerned b/c it sounded ok to my d. and she was comfortable with it. (PLus she makes friends VERY easily and is quite outgoing, so we never worried about that part.)When her admission decision wasn't posted on the site, she became upset and said, at that point, waitlisting would be fine AND if she happened to get waitlisted for fall and accepted in the spring, she would go to Shepherd for one semester. So she had it planned and That's the way it worked ...wow, she was very happy. My oldest D. graduated from Shepherd w/ a degree in sec. education and she now teaches Health at the high school where her little sis. is. She won't like Shepherd for many reasons...mostly b/c she wants to go away to college to meet new people, get a little distance from home..... and MANY of her HS friends will be at Shepherd or WVU...neither school was appealing to her ....but EVERYONE from here applies to Shepherd, just in case. Where does your d. want to go? Was Md. her dream school?

Her dream school was Delaware. We saw it twice and she absolutely fell in love with it. She also liked Maryland, but when we saw it I thought it was so big, but my daughter loved it also. My thought about Maryland was that if she wanted to go to such a large school she should go to Penn State (we live in PA) and take advantage of the low cost tuition. So she applied ED at Delaware, first deferred and then WL. Since she was hoping to get in Delaware ED, she was delaying the addit essays at Maryland so didnt apply priority by Dec 1st.

So now her acceptances are Penn State main campus, Syracuse (with about $10000, Ithaca, Pitt and Binghamton. Right now she is up at Penn State main campus with a girlfriend for 2 days to see if she likes it. Of course she would like to get off of the WL at Delaware or Maryland. My Daighter is also like yours, has a million friends, makes friends very easy. That is why she was against going to Penn State, she wanted somewhere where everyone in her high school isnt going.

We looked at Towson also. She decided not to apply there. So right now I'm hoping she likes Penn State, we'll send the deposit and just hope for the best on the other WLs. She loved Syracuse, but its $41000 a yr, and she only got $10000. And I have a smart son who will be going to college in 3 years, so I have to consider the $ factor.

Is she contacting admissions at Delaware? It sounds like she has lots of options, but if that's where her heart is, she should continue to try to woo admissions there. What programs of study is she interested in? Anything new to add to a resume? Even if she just called to say, "yes, I'd like to remain on the waitlist. Thank you." that's something. Counselor told d. today she and the admissions counselor from Md have been playing phone tag....her counselor wants to tell them, again, how much the girl wants to attend, to see if she can help get her off the list. IF my d. stayed in WV, she would get a free ride! She got the PROMISE scholarship but you HAVE to go to an in state school...all we would pay is room & board. But she wants that degree from MD....which she feels (hopefully) would open more doors for her than one from Shepherd...not that that's a bad school, but it's really for education majors and that's not her. I feel I could write a book about this process now, don't you?

Honestly I do also. When she was first deferred she wrote a letter saying that it was her first chice, disappointed etc.. With the waitlist letter that came, it said they want her 3rd quarter grades. So what we were going to do is send another letter with what she has been up to, with the 3rd quarter grades. This yr my daughter has 2 ap classes, and the rest honors classes. So her report card will not be all a's. (Maybe a c or two which will not help her). Supposedly the colleges are supposed to look at how difficult your courses are, however it doesnt seem to me that they really do. I will also have her talk to her gc to see if they will make a call for her. You are right she does have alot of options, but she really doesnt see it that way. She applied as undecided as she really doesnt have any idea what she wants to do. I think when my son is ready to look at colleges, I hope that he doesnt have an absolute favorite. Amd maybe I wont go on the college confidential site and drive myself nuts.

Hummm..those c's won't help, I don't think. Why don't you have the counselor call Delaware as soon as possible and explain WHY she would be a great addition to the school and explain the most recent grades. I wouldn't wait too long. If I understand correctly, they will start pulling from the waitlist after May 1st, and you'd want to have some contact made by them. But I would encourage her to get excited about a school that has accepted her as she is and not put all her hope on a waitlist. She's been accepted at GREAT schools, do you think she can talk herself into falling in love with one of them?

Found these interesting statistics from last year 2004/2005 for UMD:

placed on the waitlist: 2,530

accepting placement on waitlist: 2,331

accepted from waitlist (fall) 180 (spring) 1,328

Not good odds...
total applied: 22,292 total admitted: 11,499 total enrolled: 4,178
