My daughter just received a letter from the Washington Mentorship Program at AU congradulating her for her acceptance into AU for the Spring 07 session. The letter described the mentorship program for Fall 06 and said she can sign up for it.

I called the number for this program and was told their letter should have come after we received the acceptance package for the Spring session. Entry into AU in January is not contingent upon participating in the mentorship program.

In any case, has anyone else been accepted for Spring 07? Does anyone know why one is accepted for the Spring semester and not for the Fall? And last, does anyone know anything about the mentorship program - pros or cons?

I got the same thing. I've never heard of a college accepting people for the spring semester but not the fall...I'm guessing maybe they just didn't have enough space this year for everyone?

Some universities do accept you in the spring because of housing and space limits. While it may seem like an odd thing at first, you should at it like a chance for her to take some time off and possibly also time for her to maybe move to washington ahead of time and get an internship or a job to begin networking.

I got accepted into the 07 semester too.
My mother talked to an admissions rep over the phone, and she that it's not that bad. You're an AU student for the first semester, but you live in the Tenleytown location that's about 3 blocks away from the main campus. They had a tremendous amount of applicants this year, so that's why they're admitting 400 students this way.

Actually, that's not quite right. You are not an official student for the first (Fall) semester. Your official start date at AU is Spring 07. However, if you wish, you can participate in AU's Washington Mentorship Program in the Fall of 06. You live at the Tenley campus and can take some special classes whose 15 credits may be transfered into AU. Any scholarships you receive (merit or need based) can not be applied to this. You pay full price. You don't have to participate in this program to be eligiblle to start in the Spring. You can take classes at a jr. college (think cheaper) and have these transfered to AU (but check with them first), you can work all Fall, or even sleep all Fall.

Tabla, have you received the full packet of info yet, including financial offers? My D received a congradulatory letter from the Washington Mentorship Program which mentioned her acception into Spring 07. But, still has not received official notification from Admissions with an offer packet.

I would really think about using any contacts you have to find something really valuable for the fall and going to AU. You might just decide on another university, but sometimes something ends up working out and allows you to do something that's really amazing.
