Hey I just got an e-mail from The University explaining how sign up for Spring 2008 courses will be done. I was under the assumption that I had a declared major, but when I signed onto ISIS tonight it says undeclared.

I'm freaking out a little bit because it looks like people that have a declared major meet with their advisor before those who don't. Does that mean that they can register before me? Also it says if you don't know you're advisor then you gain access to ISIS on 11/16/07--when everyone else has acces on 11/5/07. Fortunately, I printed out the name of my advisor, but hey, that really blows for people who don't have/know their advisor.

Is it just a free-for-all on 11/5/07? I do know what I want to major in, and thought that was a done deal. Should I go on VISSTA and put it there--it looks like there is some sort of a computer pull down sort of thing where I can put in my major and minor interests--will this be a good thing to do? Or will the timing of changing something-mess things up, and risk losing the advisor that I do have? --So that I wind up in that 11/16/06 limbo? Do I need to go to an office somewhere and talk to a person?

How can I maximize my chances of getting classes that I want. Several of my current classes are taught next Spring by the same professor as well. I want this continuity.

Please give me advice. This "major stuff" came as a bit of a shock to me. I do have something like 27 AP credits already that are posted on my transcript site, does that help me at all???--I thought in the past that it did?? So that would be 27 plus my current load.

It seems like I am perpetually surprised by the procedural stuff at UVA> and if one isn't paying attention, there's a very real downside. Makes me feel a little paranoid. I don't like getting this sort of e-mail right in the middle of mid-terms and this somewhat forced housing decision stuff. But oh well, that's what I'm dealing with. Any advice?
Thanks.

Now I just learned that my advisor does not schedule over the web and they have printed out that they "suggest other means of scheduling". Come on...... if it's not one thing, it's another.
He's in the mathematics dept., this is not my major, but I don't care. Should I e-mail him? Go to his office? I guess the answer to my own question is "yes", but I'm not impressed with the system thus far.
I wish there was a Dean J equivalent for students who are already at The University--hey now there's an idea!!!!

wow, you're freaking out
come to smith!! i'll help you.
basically, registration goes by class year in order of total number of credits
so as a first year, you get to register last.
but don't worry, like we all told you over the summer, class shopping is big and you can switch things up in the spring.

Thanks for your concern Hazelorb, but I'm not freaking out.....well, maybe a little. I'm just the type of person who likes to have my ducks in a row, if you know what I mean. My VISSTA looks totally appropriate, and acknowledges the AP credit they've given me. I understand that registration goes by total # of credits and therefore, as you write, 1st years probably would wind up "registering last", but with my AP credits, I've got a lot of credits. I'm breathing.

don't stress! you get an assigned time based on how many credits you have... I should be registering the morning ISIS opens. The times are assigned over about a week long period; ISIS frequently hiccups during class sign up and is 'overloaded' so other than worrying about that, chill.

To declare your major you have to go to Garrett Hall and pick up a Major Declaration form (its a white form in triplicate) then go to your departments website and see how they handle major declarations. Often you contact one of the heads of the department and they suggest an adviser. You then take the form and a copy of your VISTAA and sit down with your advisor and plan out the courses you must take to get your major. They then sign the form and you drop it off at Garrett usually, where they input it into the computer and it will then be official.

As for scheduling this semester, go to your assigned general advisor. E-mail them first and set up an appt. and then take your VISTAA and a list of the courses you are planning to take next semester. They then will give you an "access code" which will allow you to log into ISIS at your assigned time.
