Spring 2008 or Fall 2008?

Hi everyone,

I applied to UVA a year ago as a transfer, was placed on the waitlist, and then rejected. I have since graduated with an Associates in Business Administration from a Virginia community college with a 3.5 GPA and Cum Laude. I'm currently attending my first semester at George Mason University, but would really like to attend UVA. As for my credentials, I have a 3.5 GPA from a VA community college, 22 years old and work 30hrs a week as an IT administrator. Should I apply for the spring to the CLAS or just wait and apply for fall 2008? I would prefer to enter the Commerce school, but I would also be glad to enter the CLAS.

If I apply for spring 2008 entry, UVA will base my application on my present credentials. These credentials would be - 3.5 GPA Associates from a VA CC, in-state student, 30hrs a week work experience same job last 3years, 2 or 3 letters of recommendation, a few extra-curriculars, and that's about it.

If I apply for fall 2008 entry, there will be more qualifications to base my application on.

Fall 2008:
3.5 GPA Associates
In-state student
30hrs a week work
2 or 3 letters of recommendation
A high GPA from GMU for 2 semesters - I'm aiming for a 3.7+ GPA at GMU while taking 15 or so credits
ECs - Entrepreneurship club and possibly forming some type of investment club at GMU
Volunteer time - I'll be volunteering later this winter a few hours each week at a hospital
Writing - I will be writing articles for two online finance magazines starting this winter
Politics - I'm going to try and work on a campaign starting in the spring 2008
Business - I'll be launching a side IT consulting business in spring 2008

So my question is, is it worth it to even apply for the spring 2008 entry at UVA? Second, do I look competitive for fall 2008 entry into UVA CLAS or Commerce?

Thanks!

This seems a bit strange to me. I thought VA community colleges had an agreement to take AA degree holders from instate. Am I missing something?

Any thoughts on this?

Blackwater,
I am a new first year student at UVA, so I'm not that sophisticated about transferring and such, but it seems to me like you would have an advantage to try to transfer to UVA in spring 2008. Many people are reluctant to leave where they are until the end of spring semester. So you'll have less competition. Of course there will be the fall 2008 deluge of applications, and more competition.
Also spaces open up for various reasons, and that would make spring ideal for you too. UVA would have less applicants to fill those new vacancies.
Again, I don't pretend to be an authority, that's just how I look at it. You are clearly a hard working, smart person, but transferring can be a bit harsh and you want every advantage you can get. To me, spring is your answer.

I agree. Since you have an AD, you must have had two years of college work done, and UVA won't take more than 60 credits, so it's to your best advantage to apply sooner rather than later. If you want to go comm-school though, you have to wait until fall. As far as transferring, why didn't you apply under the agreement for fall 07?
