spring 2009 bio 1b chem 3a/3al

what books do we need?
i checked neds and the bookstore and both list:

BIO 1B:

Biology (W/Mastering Biology), CampbellBenj Copyright 07Edition 8

Biology, CampbellBenjCopyright 08Edition 8

Do i need both of these? or just the first one, with mastering biology? Can i get another edition, such as the seventh one?

CHEM 3A:

Organic Chemistry (W/ Sol.Man/Acs Model Kit/Chempo, VollhardtFreemanBinding Kit/Copyright 07Edition 05

Does this include all of the above, because below the required materials, it just lists the stuff for an additional price? Should I just get the textbook by itself without the solutions manual, model kit and chem portal access?

Get the 8th edition b/c 8th is required by bio 1a if you do take that class.

Get the package because it really is cheaper than buying it individually.

so i don't need to buy both editions? just the 8th one with mastering biology right?

what about the organic chemistry book?

Just the 8th edition. For fall semester bio 1a, you don't even need mastering biology. I do not know about bio 1b.

The organic chemistry package is REALLY good. The study guide/solution manual is helpful if you do the book problems. Frechet's head GSI last year posted problem sets with solutions but Vollhardt's head GSI did not offer anything so you basically had to do problems in the book yourself and look up the answers. Also the molecular kit is useful to visualize molecules. The package includes the textbook, solution manual/study guide, molecular kit, and chemportal access code. The chemportal access code gives you access to the website for the book which is not all that useful but the other stuff is really useful.

my sister already has the Vollhardt book + solution manual that i can use.

do you guys think it's possible to buy the molecular kit + chemportal access by themselves?

Look into a different molecular kit since the one they sell is $50 alone. There are $20 ones online I believe. Chemportal access is useless unless you really need the ebook. The other stuff they offer doesn't even work on the website.

You don't really need mastering biology for Bio 1B. While they do have some diagrams, practice exams you can use to prepare, that material is all based off of the book. And since the professors like to base their exams off of their lectures, not the book, mastering biology isn't the most useful study tool.

do you happen to have a link to where i can buy those cheap kits?

thanks a lot.

is it hard taking both courses concurrently?

I would only assume that it is not difficult if Bio 1B, but from what I hear Chem 3A/L and "BIO 1A" would be very difficult.

Bio 1B with Chem 3A/L is doable

Bio 1A/L with Chem 3A/L is impossible because Chem 3A is a prereq for Bio 1A/L
Bio 1A/L with Chem 3B/L is horrible
Bio 1B with Chem 3B/L is slightly less horrible

is it necessary to take Chem 3A/L and Chem 3B/L consecutively? do you think it'll be okay if we skip 1 semester to take chem 3b/l or does a lot of material relate to chem 3a/l?

I took Chem 3A/L this summer and I am taking Chem 3B/L in spring, so yes it can be done, however it shouldn't be done without reason. I delayed Chem 3B/L because of schedule conflicts.
