Spring 2011 admissions cycle

MC, you have no idea, haha. I’m going bald just from ripping my hair out.

I had the interview last week and I haven’t heard anything yet…you can only imagine how I feel

ComaPrison speaks the truth. Arrive on campus, meet people, party, and then prepare to not leave the library until May :). That said… it’s awesome! Good luck all!

Reading your posts is really helpful as I too sit here on pins and needles waiting for a response from the GS Admissions Committee. I was told I would hear “mid-November”, which should be any minute now. Let’s continue to keep our fingers crossed!

Best of luck to you maxman!

Hellojan, I love your quote from Dean Awn. It inspires feelings of equal parts excitement and dread – seems appropriate. And now that I’ve been accepted, I might have to take you up on your offer. I actually moved to NYC almost 2 months ago but haven’t had much chance to explore campus, other then briefly when I was there for the GSAE.

I got in!!! I got the call 20 min. ago, I’m freaking out! I was so excited that when I was asked if I had any questions, I practically couldn’t speak. See you around lewisohn hall MC!

That’s great news rcave! Congratulations!
You’re in L.A.? I grew up and went to school in So. Cal.

Anyway… care to post your stats?

Congrats again! See you in January.

I’m at Santa Monica College right now! I love living in L.A. but I’m ready to move back to NY to finish school. My stats are a bit unique, as I went to college 9 years ago and left because I was not ready for college. I was also deeply impacted by 9/11 which occurred a few weeks after I first arrived in NY (I was living a few blocks away at the time).

I came back to school (part-time) in 2008 and I’ve had a 3.94 GPA in 49 semester units. I got one B my first semester and all A’s since. Looking at my previous college transcript, which was really bad btw, shows that the admissions committee really takes a holistic approach to each applicant. I really feel like I expressed my story in the essay, and I feel like that is what got me in.

I got a phone call, but I still don’t have access to the financial aid page BTW.

Where in L.A. did you grow up? What H.S. did you go to? I went to Crossroads High School in Santa Monica.

Congrats, RCAVE! Very happy for you.

I had a phone interview on Thursday. I suppose I’ll hear something soon enough.

I’m in. Got the call today around 2 p.m. I’ll post stats tomorrow when I get a chance. Good luck to everyone else.

Also, interestingly enough, I’m also attending Santa Monica College.

Rcave: I grew up and went to H.S. way out in the Santa Clarita Valley, by Magic Mountain. And as for college, I originally went to school at CalArts before moving up to San Francisco.

Boola: glad to hear you had an interview! My fingers are crossed for you. We took the GSAE together last month and I’m hoping to see you once again in January under more celebratory circumstances.

GTW: That’s awesome! Congratulations!

I received my admissions packet via FedEx today and am now registered for an APS (Academic Planning Session) on 11/23.

I don’t know anything yet…I’m freaking out

I can access FinAid now. Looks like…

Hope to get the official word on Monday.

Boola!!! That’s a very, very promising sign. I mean, I honestly think it’s a sign of certainty but hopefully you’ll know for sure very soon. But it’s probably not jumping the gun to say congratulations!

Thanks, guess we’ll see.

Trying to figure out how to pay for it now…hmmmm

BoolaBoola, yeah, I’d say you can expect a call Monday or Tuesday. No reason for Admissions to be speaking with FinAid unless you got in.

My stats:

Prospective major at CU: Philosophy with a concentration in political science.

College GPA: 4.0 (34 credits / 2 full-term semesters, 1 summer session)

Work:
U.S. Marine Corps, Combat Correspondent (4 years, 8 months.)

ECs:
College Philosophy Forum, President
College Newspaper, copy editor

Volunteering:
Upward Bound House homeless shelter, food service (2010)
Brevard County Public High Schools, teaching assistant (2008)
Department of Defense Education Activity, teaching assistant (2006)

Letters of Recommendation:
I had two outstanding, somewhat personal letters of recommendation from professors with whom I took two or three classes with, which described me as among the very best students they had and used anecdotal and statistical information evidencing such.

Essay:
I considered this the strongest part of my application. If anyone wants to read my essay, PM me and I’d be glad to show you. It’s chronological, but I think I made it work; I also have the peculiar advantage of having had a very atypical life.

Personality/Autobiographical information:
I was born into a working poor environment, an only child with a single mother who dropped out of school in the seventh grade, who worked many jobs and typically earned about $14,000 per year. I was very anti-establishment in my teenage years, and I felt that the educational system in neighborhoods like mine was a farce perpetuated by the convenience of the ghetto endemic. After 9/11, I decided to join the Marine Corps as a journalist because in spite of my anger towards the government, the idea of a group of men and women who believed in something enough to sign their lives to it was a novel concept to a boy surrounded by slum apathy. I was sent primarily to humanitarian assistance/disaster relief projects during my time in, detailing our efforts bringing aid to the third world. I had a great awakening during this time, realizing the parallels and contrasts between the poverty of my youth and in these nations. Going back to school on the GI Bill, I fell in love with books and became intensely interested in educational politics, because I felt that education was the key missing factor from each of these areas where the poor were so politically insecure and disaffected. I intend to work in educational politics and detailed in my essay why I felt Columbia’s pragmatic approach to political philosophy and dedication to its non-traditional program were perfect for the cultivation of my want for radical approach to educational policy.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Inspiring story GTW. Looks like we have a promising entering class! Good luck Boola, but I don’t think you need it.

Hey BoolaBoola and giuli89,
I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing what your phone interview was like? My boyfriend has one at 2:30 today and is nervous about what they might ask?

Guys I’m in!!! I’m so damn happy!!!
