Spring 2015 Transfer Thread

Hi guys, I know it's still a little early, but seeing as spring transfer applications are due October 1st, I thought I would make a thread. So is anyone else applying to transfer to Cornell this spring? If so, which college? I guess we can just do the typical stats sharing that is common in the transfer threads here on CC. I'll go first.

Current School: Emory University
Year: Sophomore
Applying to: College of Arts and Sciences
Major(s): Anthropology, Linguistics
Current GPA: 3.7
High School GPA: 3.9
Extracurricular Activities:
1. Secretary of the Student Association of Middle Eastern Studies at Emory (sophomore)

7. Emory Club Crew, my boat won a bronze medal in Chattanooga, TN during the Head of the Hooch regatta 2013 (freshman)
8. (During summer 2014) Worked as camp counselor for Congressional Schools of Virginia, was my first paid work experience
9. (During summer 2014) I was an unpaid intern at the Arlington Public Schools Languages Services Registration Center to administer exams in Spanish and French to second-language students needing English class placements
10. (During summer 2014) I undertook an independent study with the permission of the Jerome "Buddie" Ford Nature Center in Alexandria, VA to catalog the insect species found at the Dora Kelley Nature Park

I know the numbers aren't very impressive, so I hope that my essays will really show my passion for anthro and linguistics, and how Cornell caters to my specific interests in those fields. I applied to transfer this fall but I didn't make it, so let's hope I make it this spring. Cheers!

Hey whats up? I was looking for a thread like this, haha. @rdlp123 looks like you’ve got some impressive EC’s  Why do you want to leave Emory?

Here are my stats:
Current School: Oregon State University
Major I’m in now: Computer Science
Major Im applying to: A&S Computer Science
Current GPA: 3.94
HS GPA was nothing special, Im assuming they dont care about it much considering I’ve already completed 2 years here at OSU.

EC’s:
-Software Engineering Internship (paid) at Hewlett Packard last summer
-Was a validation engineer a Intel Corporation last last summer
-4 years on my high school robotics team (FIRST tech challenge), went to national championships twice
-Working as a tutor online at InstaEDU (Chegg is the parent company). I tutor Math, Physics, and Computer Science

-3 LOR’s, excellent
-Very good essays

Hey guys. I was waiting for one of these to pop up. Question: Isn’t the due date October 15? That’s what the Common App says and the CALS admissions office told me that as well.

@DukeSilver17‌ yes i believe it is oct 15

Hey @arkarind‌ and @DukeSilver17‌ sorry I haven’t gotten around to posting in this thread in a bit. The semester has been quickly picking up and we all know how that goes.

@arkarind‌ No, YOUR EC’s are pretty awesome! It will definitely help that they are so well tied to what you want to study.

Are you guys almost done with your apps?

Also, where else are you guys applying?

I am applying to Cornell, U Notre Dame, UVA, Northwester, William and Mary, and U Mich Ann Arbor.

You both have very impressive extracurriculars. I wish I could say the same.

I’m applying to only Cornell right now. I’m dying to get in. If I don’t get in for Spring then I’ll have to re-evaluate my options.

Im also applying to UT Austin, Georgia Tech, UWisconsin Madison, UW (seattle), and UIUC. I Hope cornell will accept me, transfer is probably hella competitive.

Do our high school stats matter? I am 2 years into college already, so I am guessing they won’t matter as much, right?

Something I’m worrying about is the fact that if I get in through a transfer, that I won’t feel as if I “deserve” to be at cornell. It seems like the transfer acceptance rate is higher than getting in as a freshman in your senior year of college. With my HS stats, I definitely would not have stood a chance of getting into Cornell. They were not terrible. I did an IB diploma and did pretty good, but definitely not Ivy league level. It was in college that I resolved to work harder, and so my college stats are way better. I’m worried that if I get in and decide to go, people may say things behind my back along the lines of “How the hell is he going to Cornell? We all knew him from high school and he wasn’t the best kid”, and that other people will think that I am not qualified enough to be at Cornell. What if people ask me about my SAT scores? My SAT was sub 2000, definitely not good enough for Cornell. What if when I go to cornell people ask me about that stuff (my HS GPA, my SAT), and then talk behind my back about how I’m not good enough and stuff? Sorry for rambling, but I’m wondering if someone can alleviate my concerns, as this is kind of troubling me.

I’m applying from Georgia Tech! Hopefully, I can get in!

@arkarind I completely understand where you’re coming from. But you have no reason to worry.
Cornell has a reputation for being especially transfer friendly, and transfers have as much right to go there as those who got in through high school. Honestly, your high school record is a poor indicator of your academic ability. You have to study a lot of material that you’re simply not interested in, but it’s required, and that may affect how you perform in your classes. In college, you have substantially more freedom in what you study. If you study what you like, you’ll probably put more effort in and consequently perform better. Also, rigor at the high school level is extremely variable depending on where you went to school, even if you took APs. SAT scores can also be a poor indicator of your ability because many kids spend thousands of dollars on SAT prep to the point that they just become so familiar with the nature of the questions that it’s a cakewalk.

In terms of students at Cornell talking behind your back, I think your anxiety is unfounded. Cornell is so selective that if you get in, you most likely deserve it. Only at state schools and mid-tier privates do you have more diversity in the academic caliber of the average student, which can lead to better students looking down upon those who didn’t perform as well in high school. If anything, bitterness over affirmative action bias is more ubiquitous than bitterness over people getting in as transfers.

On the topic of people discussing high stats with you, no one gives a ■■■■ tbh. I can see some sharing of info between fellow transfers, but otherwise, I doubt it. Sorry for the spam haha

Have Cornell downloaded any of your guys application yet?

@Hola1357‌ Cornell hasn’t even sent me the link to view my application status yet -_- and I submitted my app on Thursday last week.

I submitted on Aug. 30th…

Is the admissions rolling? I haven’t submitted yet because my recommenders havent responded yet -.-

@DukeSilver17‌ Thanks for alleviating my concerns  Its just that some people I sorta know from high school go to Cornell, I’m worried about what they might say lol

When are admissions decisions released?

Does the prestige of our current university relative to cornell matter? My school (Oregon State University) is significantly lower ranked than Cornell for computer science on US News

@arkarind‌ Remember, Cornell admits transfers from community colleges too! I’d say it’s more on the promise and prestige that YOU come to accrue at your current school rather than that of your current institution.
