Hi, I currently go to CUNY Hunter College and I absolutely despise it here. I want to transfer to Stony Brook but with my 3.15 GPA, would I even be considered? I did terrible the first semester freshman year with a 2.9, but raised it to 3.15 the second semester with a 3.5. I also have 33 credits right now. I’ve honestly lost all hope when the decisions haven’t even started yet. All the post I’ve read so far are people with 3.5+ getting in. Would I have a chance in getting in?
I go to Hunter College too! I am transferring for the same reasons! haha
In term of gpa, I think it would depend on what kind of classes you took at Hunter.
@zitac15 No, I applied to Fordham, NYU, Cornell, and Boston University!
By the way, do you know if Stony accepts midterm reports? If they do, you can show that you’ve improved even more with your current grades. Also, for transfers, it’s mostly important that you have a certain goal that you want to reach, and they want to know specifically about your plans at their university. They want to know that you can handle rigorous education, but they also want to know why you are transferring, and how their program can be beneficial for you and your goals. Let’s both do well this semester and I hope you get in!
Im awaiting admission desicion from Hunter and I would love to know why neither of you dont like the university. I will appreciate any insight either of you are willing to share.
@sourpumpkin It really would depend on your major, but if you are going for nursing program or any of the pre-health programs, I think Hunter College will definitely prepare you academically for that. However, if you are looking for another major, I would recommend taking the time to look into the program that you applied to! I personally believe that it really depends on what major you are going for. Some departments are really well organized, but some departments are just not… If you have more questions about your major, let me know!
@springasdnc18 I really hope you get in! Praying for you LOL.
I honestly don’t know. But from what I’ve read on different posts, they might as for midterm transcript. They didn’t really ask for anything on the application besides GPA and transcript. So, I don’t know how I’m going to show them why I want to transfer.
@zitac15 haha thank you! I think for you, it depends on the major you are going for, and how well you did in some of those classes at Hunter. So if you are an Computer Science major and maybe you wanted to transfer to Stony (for their CS program) in order to get a more rigorous education, etc., as long as you have good grades in those classes I think you will have a good chance. Do they require essays for SUNY’s?
@springasdnc18 Hmm, I’m still undecided for my major so I don’t know how that’s going to work out. Haha. They didn’t require us to do anything which I’m a bit nervous about. Like, they’re just going to look at my transcript and be like “oh, this person has a low GPA, let’s not take her in” but in reality there’s a reason. Honestly at this point, it’s too late. Really hope I get in, if not, Fall 2018 :’( Have you heard from any of the colleges yet?
@sourpumpkin Really what @springasdnc18 said. Besides the fact that some of their programs here at Hunter are shit, I feel that the environment here is just not good. I would recommend you to go check around the school and see how you feel first. But from my perspective, this school is just… suffocating.
As far as major goes, the nursing program and pre-med here is pretty good. But it’s highly competitive and the professors are absolutely terrible at discussing. Computer science is also pretty popular along with media and psychology. Definitely look at Hunter’s program so you get a better understanding of the requirements needed. I hope you get in!!

@zitac15 Yeah, there are definitely some colleges that value the numbers. As long as you are doing good right now and keeping your grades up, I think you would have a chance for an even more competitive school for the next fall! I hope you didn’t say that you were undecided when you were applying to stony …D: It’s okay to be undecided at your current school, but it’s important to show that you are interested in a certain major at the school you are applying to! And, yes I did get into two schools!
