Hey everyone! I was wondering if any CCers knew anything about spring admission at Whitman. Has anyone actually done it or known someone who has? Does it make a big difference in friends - has everyone already formed their own friend groups, or is everyone welcoming towards those who enter in the spring? How does it impact the freshmen core class? Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

I know of a spring admit who later was give a space for fall so don't know how the spring part would have worked out. But if it is your first choice it is a way to be a Whittie and I think the difference in start time vanishes quickly

Morganc, my daughter was initially admitted for spring but ended up starting in the fall. She was not really sure she wanted to wait to start college in the spring. She let Whitman know she really wanted to come in the fall, but would come in the Spring if she didn't get in for the fall (although she was not committed to doing it and had a back-up plan of sorts). She found out that she could go in the fall pretty early in May. She knows several people who did amazing things in the fall, started in the spring, and made a great transition. I'm sure it's not the easiest way to start college, but it seems to work out at Whitman. You start Core in the spring, and do the second semester the following fall with the other Spring admits (called Jan Starts).

I know a few people who started at Whitman this past January. From conversations with them, starting in January doesn't sound too bad. It is a great opportunity for an unexpected trip or work to pay off Whitman's fairly heft pricetag. I've heard of people going on fun, extended outdoor excursions, volunteering, working 7 jobs, so it's really what you make of it.

Also I've noticed that all of the Jan Starts are all really close. Instead of the usual number of core sections, there are only 2 for Jan Starts, leading to interaction in and out of the classroom. The tradeoff is that a Jan start may or may not have a hard time bonding with their section. People have often found their group of friends by this point, though it obviously isn't impossible to join one.

All in all, if you feel like Whitman really is the school for you, and plan your semester off wisely, starting in the spring isn't such a bad prospect.

Hey, I am a current Whitman student who just started this Spring semester after being admitted as a Jan-start last year. Somebody else had some questions about being a Jan-start, so here’s what I wrote there:
