For spring admit students not participating in FPF, spring housing is not guaranteed. Does anyone here have experience with receiving on campus housing (in dorms) in the spring? How likely is it for one to receive housing?

Another thing is the first semester experience. By not attending in the fall, is it hard to assimilate into the community (club groups and musical organizations) and meet people?

I was an FPF student during the Fall 06 semester.

To my knowledge, I think you have a pretty good chance at getting housing. Although I participated in the FPF program and received housing in the Fall, I personally know of five spring admits that got housing during the spring semester. There tend to be quite a few students that join sororities and fraternities and decide to move into their respective greek houses for the spring term which opens up some dorm space for the spring admits.

As far as assimilating into the social scene at Cal is concerned, I really don't think you should have a problem at all. As long as you are outgoing, you should meet a ton of people through your classes, activities, and housing. You can join and participate in any club or student activity on campus whenever you want too. The only thing I liked about coming in the fall was that it enabled me to get adjusted to the campus and college life. Also, I met a lot of people through FPF and the dorms first semester...but i need to go..i have a final to take...sorry i cut short good luck

I know the idea of coming in during the spring is scary - I too wondered how on earth i would make friends, join clubs and organizations etc.
but there's not much to worry! most organizations hold introductory sessions and accept members at the beginning of the spring semester and it's really easy to join and participate.
after the first couple weeks of adjusting to your roommates, finding your way around, etc. you'll find that it didn't even matter that you joined in the spring - no one will really know and you're college experience is not really affected by that at all!
actually being a spring admit has its perks: having gone through one whole semester at cal already, most students will be tired out but you will be fresh and ready to take on the workload - this truly gives you an edge over your fellow classmates!
also, I know they scare you in terms of housing when you go to calso, etc. but all the spring admits I know got housing on campus.

so chill! come to berkeley and have the time of your life!

wow, thanks for all the helpful advice guys! i'm much less apprehensive about entering cal in the spring now.
