Spring Admit; L&S Undecided switch to MechE?

I originally applied as an undeclared L&S back in November, but between then and now I have decided that I may want to switch to mechanical engineering. I am a Spring Admit student, so I am wondering if anyone here has successfully done this before, and when they took Chem 1A (The FPF program does not offer Chem 1A I believe)?

Here is the College of Engineering’s procedure for changing major into an engineering major:

[Change of Major — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/degree-options/change-of-major.html)

If you are a spring admit in the College of Engineering or trying to switch to the College of Engineering, you may want to consider attending a semester system community college in the fall instead of FPF, since the community college is much more likely to offer courses that articulate to Chemistry 1A/1B and Physics 7A/7B that you will likely need to take starting as soon as you can (see [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) – for prerequisites for Berkeley Mechanical Engineering, go directly [here](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)).

If you do attend FPF as an engineering or intended engineering major, then you would want to take an R&C course (English or Rhetoric R1B if you have a 4 in AP English, R1A otherwise), a math course if you do not have a 5 on AP Calculus BC (FPF only offers 1A and 1B), and courses to fulfill the College of Engineering’s [humanities and social studies requirement](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/advising/HSS%20MASTER%20List%202011-12%20%203-30-11%20FINAL.pdf). You won’t be able to get started on Chemistry or Physics at FPF.

Actually, those not in engineering already may want to check this:

[Change of College — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/prospective-students/admissions/change-of-college)

you could also take a chem course this summer at a juco or local college on a semester system.

Note, however, that conventional wisdom on cc is that it is extremely difficult to transfer into to Eng from L&S – there aren’t many slots and they are ‘reserved’ for juco transfers. Do you have Eng offers from other colleges? If that is your passion, you might want to consider those options as well.
