I think it’s becoming more and more common. Middlebury has been doing this for a long time, and I know Colby has some of its new freshmen spend the first semester in a foreign study program. Dartmouth doesn’t do spring admit but they do have the D-plan, which forces every student to spend a term away from campus. It’s all about accommodating as many bodies on campus as possible, and enrolling the maximum number of students without overcrowding the place.

So what do you do until spring?

you can do a variety of things nickel:

do some courses at a comm. college

get a job

travel

relax

join a program

do some service
etc etc. at 11:20pm. thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

Ah, so you’re an hour head of me. xD But won’t you be behind the Fall admits? Or could you like, take summer school?

you could take summer school for some credits or catch-up. i think you … start the school in spring (obviously) and then take courses then.. then take the .. actually i don’t know what i’m talking about. someone else shud answer hahah.

It seems like you’d be an entire semester behind if you were a spring admit. =/

^ No not necessarily. Read the comments in the School of Cinematic Arts thread, there’s some very good and positive info on there that proves Spring admission is fine and doesn’t necessarily put you behind, There are some SCA spring admits, and discussion about these concerns.

My S is one of the SCA spring admits, Nickel. If he decides to attend, he will benefit from having taken a bunch of AP tests. I think he’ll have enough credits to catch up with his class. USC told me that it’s quite easy to transfer community college credits, if that’s what the student wants to do while waiting to start USC in January. An alternative would be to have fun during the fall, and just graduate in the class of 2012.5 - often the job opportunities are better for someone graduating out of sequence with the rest of the pack.

Financially, a late start can save a person a lot of money, too, since it’s one semester without USC tuition.

It’s not all bad, though it would be a drag to miss the excitement of moving into the dorm in August and meeting all the other new freshmen.

^Nickel, Or I think it’s the USC Spring Admits, Unite thread…I think the good info that you should read is on there.

Well, hopefully they’ll take me in the Fall. xD If they ever remember to send me something. -_-

If you were a spring admit, could you go to like a UC for a semester and then transfer over"?

^yeah you could go to any university though but you have to check the articulation website at www.usc.edu/articulation and make sure the credits do transfer. My advice? Go to a community college (if you live in CA) and enjoy life and save money for a whole semester! Trust me, I know. Spring '08 admit here.

ultimately its a great thing. i was a spring admit who started in '07.
it might be a little different socially, but academically you’ll get the same experience. and you’ll be fully integrated once you get to USC. message me if any of you have more questions. i can tell you about logistics and things like that.

also, i would highly recommend taking courses in the fall to knock your general eds out of the way. that way once you get to USC, you can focus more on your major.

i know it probably feels like as a spring admit you’ll be missing the fall experience, when in fact, you’ll have your very own move in/orientation/etc experience with the spring admits, and really will get to know each other as a group when you first get to USC. i would highly recommend Spring 09 admits make a facebook group so you can chat beforehand.

i think in the view book they give for spring admits, the last page states that u should take cc classes during first semester, idk if its mandatory or not, but it says “what should do in the fall” or something and then answers something along the lines of “take classes at community college”

ya, they recommend it, and its the easiest way to graduate on time. go look at this website to see what courses transfer over to your local community college:
