Spring/Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

45 hrs, 3.87GPA, all Aces on science/math class, apply for CNS undeclared, no lors.

hey! you should be fine! your gpa is great

@leonXiao at least you’ll get your answer soon, lol i’m not finding out until January…

@sunshine97 how do you know that?

Because CNS has already started to release admissions and almost everyone with 30+ hours should know by the the middle of december , I won’t know until January because I’m only a freshman and my 30 hours won’t be completed till the end of this semester. @amandabru

@ninjaroo, I’m in the same boat as you.

When I was fresh out of high school in 2004, I failed out of college my first semester with a 1.79 GPA. I started attending community college in the spring of 2005, had a lot of personal issues, and ended up needing to drop my classes but unable to do so before the drop date. I ended up with F’s for 16 credit hours.

Then I joined the Army. I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in human resources management with a 3.55 in residence GPA. I started using my GI Bill at the University of South Carolina towards a degree in biochemistry and left there with a 4.0 for 32 credit hours. But because my husband is in the Army, we had to move back to Texas on pretty short notice and I’m trying to transfer into biology at UT.

Without an Academic Fresh Start, my GPA is 3.08 and I stand practically no chance of getting admitted. WITH that fresh start, my GPA goes up to 3.68. Like you, I’m a veteran. I went to Afghanistan. I was the distinguished leader graduate of my WLC class and was quickly promoted. I’ve been volunteering about 10 hours a week at food pantries for over four years. Unfortunately I was unable to get any letters of recommendation before the deadline and had to submit without any. My essays were outstanding (I was an award-winning journalist in the Army and asked a lot of my former colleagues for assistance in polishing them) and explained my situation.

When I called admissions to ask about how to utilize the fresh start program, I was basically told I need to wait for my decision (which I’m pretty sure is a rejection) and then appeal it, invoking my right to a fresh start since it’s been more than 10 years. It is kind of frustrating just waiting for a rejection so I can proceed to the next step.

I’m also wondering how they’ll look at the fact that I already have a bachelor’s degree because even though it’s in a completely unrelated field to my chosen major, theoretically I have 120 hours that the university is willing to transfer.

hi! a question to the people that already got in: around what time did they accept you?

It was around noon yesterday when I last checked and found that I was admitted. It was still “In Review” when i had checked early that same morning.

@amandabru Likely around the same time that @GuerreroLonghorn was accepted. I checked mystatus Tuesday morning before I left for work (a little after 11 a.m.) and it was still in review. By the time I took my first break at 2 p.m., I’d been accepted!

I have a 3.58 and applied to COLA economics and undeclared. Still haven’t heard and I’m kind of freaking out because there have been quite a few COLA acceptances on here

I have a comparatively low GPA and I applied to COLA Economics and Government with 30+ credit hours and I still haven’t heard back. The long wait is killing me!

if a 3.5 GPA is the benchmark, then why does UT not just state that on their admissions website? I mean if you say you need at least a 3.0 and that GPA is important but so are all the other requirements then it does not make sense to me that 3.4s are most likely to be rejected… It would save a lot of people, as well as the schools admission staff, valuable time if that standard is just stated up front. Its not much of a holistic review if essays, resumes, and LoR’s only count for you if your GPA is close to a 3.5 and you have something really special. That is more like your GPA is the main factor and all the other stuff will help you out if you have something uber special, so give it a shot.

Same here, still nothing from COLA for French/International Relations. I already got accepted other places but I’m hesitant to make any decisions until I hear back from UT. I have until December 15th to let the other schools know but I just want to know already!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted so far! Hook 'em!

@DM1515 GPA is definitely the most improtant thing, but the other application materials can help between two academically similar candidates. And, to be fair, the average GPA for each major/college is pretty easily accessible online.
Also, if they don’t claim to have a “totally holistic” review process, it makes them look bad.

To those who have been admitted, have you upgraded your UT EID? It appears that we have to go in person (or wait until orientation day) to do that if we want to see our financial aid. And am I understanding this correctly - we can’t register for any classes until Jan. 12?

@GuerreroLonghorn Yeah, it appears that we have the short end of the stick on registration, at least for our first semester. I’ve also heard that it’s wise to upgrade your UT EID as soon as you can, to avoid massive lines in the future.

Also, if anyone was wondering about my transfer credit situation with the IDA system: I called admissions today and spoke to several people. Basically, if you transfer any credit in from out of state, it may take a little longer for your transferred credits to appear on an audit. As of now, I can see all of my transferred credits.

You upgrade your UT EID online. Once you do that you can go to the Flawn Center and get a UT ID card. It only takes about 15 minutes if you do that now. That will save you a lot of time during orientation, and it will make you feel official. Also, once you change your UT EID you can set up your UT e-mail account. Be sure to send in your high school transcripts and immunization record if you have not already done so. If you are taking classes this semester, you will need to submit those grades before orientation.

The bad part is that you will not be able to register until you complete orientation. A lot of classes are full, but you may be able to add/drop the first week of class. You will need to take a UGS class your first year at UT if you are not core complete.

Congrats to all who have been accepted, and good luck to those still waiting.

Does anyone know when the Admissions Office re-opens after winter break? I’ll be getting to Austin immediately after Christmas, and I want my ID before orientation.

I think they should be back the 4th of January but I’d call/email and check. I work for UT and that’s what day I’m supposed to be back in office.

@longhornlegacy Thanks!
Also, where do I go to update my EID online/make an email? Sorry for the dumb question, but UT’s website is terrible.
