Spring Grade Requests.... For Transfers.....

I'm a sophomore trying to transfer as a junior to USC, and I have a pre-req left to take in the spring.

Does this mean I will get a sgr regardless?

Or do you only get a spring grade request if they are interested in you or you are borderline or they already like you enough to want to see your spring grades???

I'm worried, because I have the math requirement left to take for public policy, and I'm just curious as to how things will go...........

Thank you!

I’m a Public policy major, btw.

I believe it could happen for any one of the reasons cited, ie, making sure you continue a current trend in high gpa after a rocky start if they like you, checking your grade in a pre req, etc…
For a pre req like math, I would assume they would check, but I seem to remember when I was applying someone had to retake math in the summer before starting at SC, so they had to have been admitted without an sgr I assume.

I wouldnt worry about it though. I got one. Just look at it an an extra chance to prove yourself and do everything in your power to do amazing this semester.

Good luck and FIGHT ON!

Thanks… all I really want is a SGR so they can see that I DOMINATE this semester… because I will be taking 16 transferable units (another 19 unit semester for me). I finished 55 units with a 3.53 GPA, and this is due to a major change at the end of spring after my GPA fell from 3.75 to 3.45…

I appreciate the advice.

i’m applying to Marshall for fall 2010 and i didn’t finish one prereq either (calculus). but i don’t think i will get a SGR b/c i finished everythign else and i have a 4.0 with 59 transferable units comlpeted at time of application. i also took 24 transferable units last fall with a 4.0. but it depends on the major. marshall says they will need to verify my grade for all prereqs before getting admitted

I’m hoping a 3.53 GPA is enough for a SGR for me for public policy.

As for you, I applied last year to Marshall for sophopmore admission: I had a 3.75 GPA, and got rejected. Hence the major change for me, realized biz is just not my bag, you know? I need something different…

BUT KEEP IN MIND I got rejected most likely because I got a W in Calculus that fall, a prerequisite, had only 16 units, and had never taken the SATs. If I were you laker, (nice name btw, we better win again this year!) I would not worry at all, as long as you are doing your pre-req this spring… you don’t have to worry about SATs because you clearly have more than 30 units… and apparently from what people tell me, as long as you get a spring grade request, and maintain that 4.0, then you can consider yourself IN.

^^but i was hoping that I would NOT get the SGR and just get admitted right away…like i think transfers get a decision by april, but if we get a SGR we have to wait until like june or even july (?). i don’t want to wait the long b/c i have to sign the intent to transfer to UCLA or UC Berkelely in june (if i get in)

Check the usc transfer results thread: I remember seeing some people who got in with calc left to do… but check to be sure.

archieg,

I’m currently at SPPD and transferred in last semester. When I applied, I had microecon and finite math left to finish in the spring. I got in without an SGR.

I got calc this spring but just like lakeforever24 I don’t expect a sgr since I’m at 3.9 with 90 credits. I imagine SGRs are more common for people in the 16-30 credits completed range.

last year i had about 60 credits and received an SGR due to having the 2nd half of calc in process (finished the others)and probably because of my lower gpa (3.5ish) . got a 4.0 GPA that semester and received an acceptance :D

but you can def. get accepted (no SGR) w/o having done all the pre-reqs

Grey, what was your GPA at the time of application? I’m applying as a junior and am REALLY worried with a 3.53… And also, were there any conditions you had? IE maintain overall 3.XX GPA…

Also, grey, I remember reading that you had a job AT USC? lol I wish I had one of those (drools…) Wouldn’t that be a HUGE advantage (ie guaranteed in?)

So basically, a 3.53 still has a chance of a SGR for public policy??? I find myself getting so nervous just thinking about what can happen! It SUCKED getting rejected, despite the fact that I was destined for a rejection applying to Marshall the way I did… I just hope I have a better shot this time you know?

No conditions. My GPA was around 3.8, though it was actually lower for USC (3.6ish?) on account of an F on my transcript for which they did not honor academic renewal. Generally they want to see you be consistent with your class grades/rigor in the spring, that’s all.

And yes, I did have a job at USC, though it was at the medical school and completely irrelevant to my major. It may have played a small role since I justified my lack of ECs with working 35-40+ hours per week. I doubt it would be pivotal though, so don’t worry!

In a nutshell, just keep consistent with your grades and try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) about whether or not you get an SGR – there really is no way of accurately predicting.

It may or may not be encouraging to you, but I am really really enjoying my time at USC and the classes at SPPD. This is truly a great place to be, and I’m really happy with my decision to attend. To think I was about to be a Golden Bear… UGH, haha. Good luck!

Thanks grey, that’s nice of you to explain your situation… I guess all I can do is do my best on the app, and wait and see what happens. In the meantime, I’ll just go about winter and spring like business as usual…

I appreciate it, and hope to see you at SPPD next year.
