Spring Open Campus...share your experience!

I have just gotten back from visiting Wellesley and the Boston area, and I'm sure many of you are also in the same boat. So share your experiences! I'm eager to read all perspectives. :)

After visiting Wellesley, I have officially decided to become a Wellesley student. I am so excited!

My SOC experience:

I ate so much food. Seriously, I'm surprised I didn't become a diabetic by the end of that trip. Ice cream, cookies, chocolate fountains, cake...!! The food at Wellesley seemed edible enough, not fantastic, but maybe that'll encourage me to try to cook for myself once in a while.

I have to say that all the students were so nice. I kept mixing up the prospies and students, though, haha. At one point I was walking up the stairs in I think it was the Lulu building, and mixed up a prospie with a student. But then an actual student stopped and answered my question that I had asked, and the three of us just kind of stood on the stairs and chatted. I also met members of the swim team, who seemed very close and friendly. I made some nice friends out of the other prospies, and I hope to see all of them at Wellesley with me. :)

I enjoyed the performances that were put on my the Wellesley students at the end of the night. The hip hop group Freestyle performed, and it is always so much fun to watch their dancing. I was also amazed by the sword dancing and circus performances. Wow. And the choir group sang so prettily. I also really liked the performance by the flute quartet from the Chamber group.

A funny thing happened with the next performance, with a violin and cello player...another prospie and I couldn't figure out if she was a guy or a girl! The cello player was asian and had short hair, and far away I thought they were a guy. So we ended up looking for their chest, but it was blocked by the music stand. Only when they stood up to bow at the end was it obvious that they were female, haha. We both sat their like "ooooh....."

The student body is very diverse, I must say. There is a large asian and African American population compared to other schools. And I did see some guys lurk around campus here and there. A parade of them passed by when I was going down the stairs, to my surprise. There were also some students who looked like guys but I knew were female (I'm not trying to be mean, it truly was hard to tell sometimes), but then it was also nice to see that there were other students who freely wore skirts and dresses. I think this mix of a student body shall keep things interesting, and I think it also shows how open minded Wellesley students must be.

So I've covered food, community, talent, and diversity...I shall finish with classes and boys (because I'm sure you'd like to know what I've heard from the other girls, haha.)

I sat in on an intro to Psych class and an Art History class. Both were really interesting. The Psych class was small and the teacher was energetic, enthusiastic, and very welcoming. I even felt comfortable enough to raise my hand and participate. She kept things interesting by presenting hypothetical situations and video clips of studies performed. Awesome. The Art History class was a lecture, and this was on the second day so I was very tired. As soon as the lights were dimmed I started falling asleep. The professor presented different pieces of art from various artists in the 1930s and compared them to each other using historical background to describe the content. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were analyzed, for example.

And finally, boys. Throughout my visit I was able to gather information on how a Wellesley student meets guys, which is always a common question amidst students looking into a womens' college. From this I gathered that there are plenty of clubs or groups to join to meet guys from other schools. Usually the guys who come to Wellesley looking for girls are to be generally avoided, being that they are the "creepers". This is true for guys who attend Wellesley parties, I think. My hostess said that I would probably like the guys from Olin, who are "geeky and cute", lol. She said that the guys from MIT tend to be full of themselves, but I did meet one guy from MIT who seemed nice enough. I'm not really worried about meeting guys, because there are so many schools around in Boston. My parents and I drove through Boston and saw that it was crawling with students.

Any questions about my visit? :) I also talked to some of the science profs, or perhaps you'd like to know about swimming? I'm not an expert, obviously, but I'm happy to share my perspective.

Please share your SOC story!

Maybe I wrote too much? :(
