Spring Open House

UMCP has an open house for admitted students on Friday. If any of you have been to one, how beneficial was the visit? I have yet to decide whether I should skip school for this or not. Thanks.

Have you committed to UMDCP yet? It will certainly help you make up your mind. I was there with my d last Friday, and they did a great job. You all start the day together, then break off by major/college, the walking tours, lunch, residence halls, etc. Lots of school spirit on display!

When I was in your position it worked out that my B/K interview was scheduled on Wednesday and the open house was on Friday. I was coming down from New York so I decided it was worth my time to hit the open house on Friday as well. I explained to my teachers and they were more than willing to help me out with making up work, but that may have been the fact that they were shocked someone from my school was even given a chance to interview for a full ride.
If you’re local, I would reccomend it, unless you’re the kind of person who has been coming up to UMD for parties since sophomore or junior year of high school. If it’s the kind of distance that would need hotel accomadations, you could probably skip it, unless you’re having trouble deciding where to go.
If you have questions and aren’t really looking at the school atmosphere, myself as well as many regular posters here would be happy to answer what we can.

I’ve visited College Park 3 times now with my daughter.

If you haven’t visited, I recommend going. As ginab says, they do a very good job, and you may really come to appreciate what Maryland has to offer (which is a lot).

If you have visited, you probably have visited enough. I found dramatically diminishing returns on the second visit.

I only live about 30-40 min. away, so that’s not a problem. Though, I have visited last year, and hope that this will help my decision in choosing a college.

I do reccomend going a second time in that case, if you’ve done the traditional visit and heard about the programs already, I suggest returning at your leisure, and kind of create your own program. If you pick a warm day during the week and walk out on the mall, not only will you see a decent sampling of the students, a lot of them will be willing to talk about Maryland. Even more will be ready to talk on Maryland Day, but since your decision has to be processed by midnight on Maryland Day that’s probably not the best idea.
Walk around campus, instead of Stamp try one of the dining halls. What is your major? I can let you know which buildings are a must see.
Also take a look at the North Campus dorms. It’ll be hard to get into a room, and there are at least two swipes to get near any residential hallways but its good to get an idea. Are you in any living learning programs? If so find out the building their located in and someone will probably be more than happy to show you around that particular dorm.

I went last friday to visit, it was awesome.
I spent the whole day there, till like 6 pm. Visited all areas, had a friend to help me tour since I am still in a cast and crutches due to ACL surgery. I loved the whole school spirit thing, the weather was great, and everyone I spoke to was helpful and friendly. I am deciding by this Wednesday, but really, I think UMD is the frontrunner!
