Basically my situation is that I don't like the school that I'm at. Not that I don't have any friends, or I don't like my classes or anything like that. I just kind of don't like the atmosphere, and I feel way too far from home (I went out of state). I'm pretty sure I'm going to transfer to a cheaper in-state school, but should I do it for the spring semester or stick it out and transfer for Fall 2010? What are your thoughts/comments?

Its getting late to try to apply for spring admission. That being said, if you have plenty of free time during the next couple of weeks or so, than it is worth a shot. You can always apply again for fall admission next semester.

If you really don’t like it, I would suggest transferring ASAP. You want to get into your new school and get adjusted as quickly as possible. You do not want to get too acquainted and ingrained in the flow of a school you dislike, either.

That said, NEU2NU is correct. I decided as a first semester freshman to apply to transfer to BU. I started this process about two weeks ago, and I’m tying up the loose ends as we speak for the Nov 1 deadline. While as long as your application is usually in, you’re fine if something else is behind, it doesn’t exactly leave a great impression.

Here’s basically my advice:
Research the schools you want to transfer to. See which ones take spring transfers. See when the application deadline for spring is (usually Nov 1, 15, or Dec 1), and take action. If it’s all Nov 1, maybe wait. If you can find some that have a deadline Nov 15 or Dec 1, go for it, because the sooner you get out, the better.

If it does not work out so that you can apply for spring at this point, start preparing immediately for the Fall transfer, so that you are ahead of the game.

Good luck.
