Spring Semester- Difference between Second Semester Begins and Instruction Begins?

I’m planning a holiday visit this winter and want to know if I have to be on campus when the second semester begins or only when instruction begins?

Are there any mandatory activities/events during this time period I would be missing if I only come when instruction begins?
