Spring sorority rush

I am currently a freshman and didn't rush fall semester cause I wasn't sure whether or not I wanted to participate in Greek Life and also wanted to get a feel for the school first. After talking to a sorority sister that I met, I decided that I do actually want to rush a sorority. I am now deciding it is beneficial to rush this coming spring semester or to wait until fall next year when I'm a sophomore.

I have been doing some research about it and heard that it sucks to rush spring because many (generally considered "top") houses don't even accept pledges. I don't know or really care that much about the "tiers" of sororities, but I would like exposure to and the opportunity to join all the available panhellenic sororities. But I've also heard that it hurts you to be rushing as a sophomore.

Can I get some advice on the subject?

If you are interested, I think you should definitely sign up for spring rush. At my school, the quota for each sorority is 85 girls and having maximum capacity is desirable. With that being said, girls drop out and graduate so there is a chance that the top sororities that you are wanting to get into aren’t at quota.

I’m not sure how spring rush works at your school, but ours is very laid back and each girl in the chapter gets involved. For example, there was a girl in one of my classes last semester that was interested in rush so I gave her name to my sister in charge of rush. She will be getting special attention because I’ve known her the entire semester and I think she would be a perfect match. Definitely keep in touch with the sorority girl you talked to because that can be an advantage to you.

In the case that you don’t like any of the sororities giving out bids during spring, fall rush may or may not hurt you as a sophomore but it really depends how competitive greek life is at your school. Although one sorority may not want to accept a sophomore, another will. You just have to make sure that you have a good college gpa (definitely important) and you are going to work extra hard during rush week (good conversation and look extra cute).

All in all, I think you should do spring rush. And also, don’t be turned off by a ‘middle tier’ sorority if you like them better than the ‘top tiers’. You would be surprised how fast sororites can change tiers. For example, there was a sorority that was number 1 two years ago until a scandal dropped them to ‘bottom tier’. I’ve known plenty of girls that joined a sorority for their reputation but ended up dropping because they didn’t mesh well with any of the girls. Be yourself, and keep an open mind!
