I am currently in my first semester of my sophomore year in a school in NYC and want to get out because I hate commuting, it wastes 3 plus hours each day. I’m in the process of deciding to transfer to UConn for Spring 2009 but not entirely sure yet.

I have a few questions:

Does Out of State transfers usually get anything in financial aid? If I don’t get anything I’ll be paying almost double of what I currently pay now but the difference will be I don’t waste time on the train and bus each day and I get to dorm.

One of the main reasons I want to transfer is because I don’t want to waste time each day commuting. On UConn’s housing site they say that transfers are guaranteed housing for two semesters. How likely is it that I get kicked out for the Spring of 2010 semester during my Junior year?

I see that there is a lottery for housing if there isn’t enough space, they said people are exempt from the lottery if they have be in their dorms for less than 5 semesters. I’m confused. Which one is it, two semesters or five semesters? How likely is it that they do this lottery thing? Do they do this every Fall and Spring?

Since a lot of people say that Storrs is in the middle of no where, where would I find off-campus housing?

I already sent in my $150 deposit. If I apply for housing, does that mean I made a full commitment that I will be attending UConn?

Thanks for your time!

As far as I know, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't get financial aid. I know a few out of staters who do, though they're not transfers. Can't help you much here, have you checked out the financial aid website?

2/3. The lottery is held once a year in the spring for the next year's housing selection. As a transfer, you will be guaranteed housing for two semesters, not five (I think the five is for new students, ie freshmen). However, since housing assignments are for one year (Fall+Spring), I don't think it's possible for you to be kicked out for Spring 2010 (since the year's housing assignment would include both Fall 2009 and Spring 2010). In other words, you're in the clear for Spring 2009, Fall 2009, and Spring 2010, but you may want to call up ResLife and double check with them.

On the other hand, you may be kicked off during your senior year (Fall 2010+Spring 2011), depending on your lottery number.

There are a few off-campus apartments and houses very close to campus; there are also a bunch of places within a 10-15 minute drive. There's a website for off-campus students:

Technically yes (I think), but really not until you've paid tuition, room and board.

Hope this helps. I'd be happy to answer any more questions (assuming I have the answers) if you have any more.
