spring vs fall admission

whats the difference in applying as a spring transfer as opposed to a fall? My highschool gpa was below par so i'm planning on applying for either spring semester of sophomore year or junior year. i really have no preference- i just want to get out. is one known as an easier time than the other?

this is specificly for nyu and barnard if anyone has some insight on those schools.

thanks a lot :)

I don't think one is necessarily easier than the other - maybe junior is, by a little. One thing you want to check, if it's relevant, is financial aid - I seem to remember seeing that Barnard doesn't offer it for spring transfers, so if that matters, go for junior year (I don't know if they reconsider it year by year). Of course, NYU is an arm and a leg anyway.

There aren't many stats on that, I think. If I were you, I would call the schools, and ask to speak to an actual admissions counselor (unless you're content with the "Uh....I'm not really sure....I think...."s you'll get from the student assistants) and discuss it with him/her. They could tell you more accurately than anyone on this forum.

Fercol, that actually was a good question. I would like to know some people who experience transfering to spring and fall seperately so we can compare and contrast finacial aid, housing, generally easing into the college, acceptance rates, etc....

"Easing into the college" is a big deal, I think. It's so much easier to meet people at the beginning of the year, when everyone is in the mood to do that, than in the middle, especially if you're introverted like me :)

Honestly, if one time is easier than the other I'm ok with not being able to ease in correctly- especially since in my case I already have friends in the schools im looking at. So does anyone have the statistics?

from what I know spring is easier than fall for most schools. BC's median gpa for spring 04 was 3.4 whereas fall 05 was 3.55...a pretty big difference. Acceptance rate went from 29% for spring to 15% for fall.

Spring admission is a lot easier UNLESS the school generelly accepts a small number of candidates. Then by the spring most openings might be filled with fall applicants.

fercol, just call the schools and ask the admissions staff directly. I'm positive you will receive a prompt and candid response.

At some schools, spring admission is much more difficult than in the fall. UVA takes only 20-30 applicants for the spring term while they take 300+ for the fall.

just call the schools

thanks. if anyone has any more info on this i'd appreciate it but i will get into contact with the schools im considering. should i just ask "which semester is easier to transfer into?". that seems like the obvious question but i feel like they wouldnt like answering that.

yeah it should be fine, or if u wana be more subtle..: "is there a difference in selectivity between the 2 admissions semesters?"

fercol what are you so afraid of? and why are you so timid? ask them anything you would like

ha will do.

there are a LOT of threads asking the same question, search for 'spring' and go through the pages.
