Hi,

I'm about to enter my sophmore year at a small New England college but am interested in transferring out this year.
At this point UVA is my #1 choice and I would like to make the move this winter instead of waiting till next fall.
On the school's website it says: "Students are ordinarily admitted only for the fall semester, although a limited number are admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences and Architectural History for the spring semester."

So, does this mean I will have a greater chance waiting until next year, or should I go ahead and apply this winter? (I will be applying to the School of Arts and Sciences.)

Also, if i happen to get rejected after applying for a spring transfer, can I proceed to apply again for the fall of 2010?

Thanks

Transfer chances for the spring admission is much more difficult. Also, it’s a weird transition period. But, I would say that the sooner you transfer, if that’s really what you want to do, the better. If you get “denied” admission for spring '10 admission, you’re automatically “rolled” to fall '10 admission, unless you withdraw your app. You then get somewhat of a second chance at admission, and can update your grades/ECs/essays/etc in between deadlines (Nov for spring, March for fall, or at least that’s what I remember)

My vote? Go for spring admission. Can’t hurt

Transfer admissions for Spring is tough…I applied for Spring '06 semester and was denied. My letter stated that over 300 applications were received and 30 were offered admission. I was not “automatically” rolled into Fall admissions, I was asked to submit in writing a request to be rolled as well as new grades, activities or information on what I would be doing during the upcoming semester as I decided to withdraw from my then-present university to save money.

And if you are rolled, you do not have to resubmit the fee or any original application materials…so my opinion would be to try for Spring and go from there.

The one thing I might warn you of would be in regards to financial aid. Since it is usually given out on a Aug.-May basis, there might not be as much to go around? Although that might conflict with the Access UVA program – I’m not sure, but if you think you may qualify for aid, contact Student Financial Services to see how they handle Spring transfers.

If you’re really keen on UVA, apply in the spring, the worst that can happen is you get denied and have to wait until the fall. If you get accepted, all the better for you.
