SPS student will answer any questions

Just found this site. Happy to answer any questions. Glad to see all the interest, SPS rocks!

What's the best thing about SPS from your perspective? Is there anything that you don't like about the school? Thanks.

what was the SPS scandal all about?

More than anything, I love my classmates. They seemed to do just an outstanding job picking the class. Everyone loves it! You know everyone in every form. No one leaves. We had manybe one new 5th former this year, never new 6th formers and no PGs. It's the tightest of communities.

Teachers and classes are fantastic. I love that your advisor lives in your house and is always available.

There are great opportunities for travel over breaks, amazing ECs and limitless options.

bearcats, were you rejected by SPS?

There was no scandal. Some alum felt the rector (headmaster) was over paid. The feud over this involved very wealthy alum who had a public arguement over it on Park Avenue. This attracted media attention!! Doubt if it would have made major newspapers if it were a lesser school. The rector, who was wonderful, left as a result. Great new rector, story over.

The real scandals happened at Milton and Groton.

no i got in..it was my first choice at first..but not so after i visited it..hotchkiss rocked my world...but anyway
i didnt ask becoz of any malicious reason..i just wanna know coz there are too many different versions

"The real scandals happened at Milton and Groton."
lol i lovve it

cool...now the folks already in BS are fighting.time to go to bed.

Well, there was a scandal, it just did not hurt the experience of the students. The rich alums who got upset were doing a responsible job looking after the welfare of the school. If you look at Saturday's Wall Street Journal, you will see salaries paid to the heads of the top boarding schools. They pale in comparison to what the former rector was collecting.

But, as I said, the school was far too strong for this to harm the students. Once the alums found out, the lid went back on the cookie jar, and SPS is still one of the best schools in the country.

Can you post a link to the article?

Bearcats, at Groton there was abuse of kids and the administration knew it and let it go on. At Milton a team abused a girl and the administration didn't respond there either. Those are scandals.

Overpaying the head of one of the Country's top schools, in the opinion of some, is not a scandal in my opinion. I guess the trustees felt he was worth it.

i heard about all these lol..i like the fact that news go so fast within the boarding school circle...like i think either SPS or choate?? got flooded last year? we knew it the next day

"Overpaying the head of one of the Country's top schools, in the opinion of some, is not a scandal in my opinion. I guess the trustees felt he was worth it."
I heard they were paying him millions and built him a holiday house..i also heard there were corruptions...again...all rumors tho

btw SPSstudent, are u like me who have a 15 page paper due tomorrow, havnet started yet and procrastinating online?? LOL?

They were paying him like a half million (which many make for far lesser jobs in my opinion), no vacation home and no corruption. In fact the school's investments did better under him than ever.

Work done for today, pretty unusual before 11:00!

i thought SPS's endownment didnt grow much compared to other schools coz at one point it was 400million but it's around the same still...given the bull market last couple years it should hav sky rocketed like most schools

Don't really know the numbers, but articles have reported the school did great under the former rector and it still has the most money per student of any school.

I did not apply to sps because of the size, but loved the gym and library. The Rector pay deal was considered a scandal , but reality was that the rector did not use good judgement with regard to compensation. This was very similar to the previous head of the NYSE who had a ridiculous pay package.Just because the board approved it didn't justify the compensation.Factoring in the "rector" standards made it terrible. However,it did not effect the students any more than Duke's Lacrosse mess effects their students. let it be.

ya we are closing up the gap and is 2nd now....lol
our endownment is almost identical..but SPS is slightly smaller

i dont see the big deal paying 500k for a good head of school, really

francis, i am asking out of curiousity, so why cant i ask?..

if u go to a BS u would understand that we like to hear about other schools and the speed rumor spreads

Interestingly Duke's ED applications were down 10% following their scandal. SPS has just become more competitive following it's supposed scandal.

every boarding school became more competitive....

there are a record number of school with below 20% admit rate

Andover, Exeter, SPS, Deerfield, Choate, Hotchkiss and Milton all reported in that range...so i think it's just a trend
