SPUR in College of Natural Resources

Hi guys, I'm currently a freshman with intended major in Microbial Biology in CNR. I have over 30 units, so I am sophmore standing. I have a 3.9 first semester with a medium difficulty courseload. I want to do some bio related research this summer and have a few questions about the SPUR program created for CNR students, as well as URAP.

How easy is it get into the SPUR program? Estimated GPA of acceptance?

Do they prefer students who are actually <sophmore level?

What are the main differences between URAP and SPUR, other than the fact that URAP is harder to get in?

Can I and should I apply to both?

Thanks for your help :)

I don’t think you’ll have much of problem finding something with SPUR. I would say the difference between SPUR and URAP is the number of experiments and positions available (URAP has more). I think that most labs prefer sophomores and juniors, but we interviewed a freshman and she was close to getting selected, so its not impossible. Just show a passion for whatever you are applying for and you have a good shot.

Yes, you can apply to both, but some of the projects in SPUR overlap with URAP, so don’t select overlapping labs or else its a waste for how much you can apply to.
